GT3 Throttle Body + IPD Plenum

I'm interested to know others possible experiences with a GT3 Throttle Body and IPD Plenum on a 2012 PDK Cayman R, my car which I purchased in August 2019 came with those fitted, everything was OK until mid September and the 1st overnight cold snap. it went into Limp mode and CEL with error code P1552, Ok for a few days then when we had another cold spell the same thing. Had an ECU remap, OK for a few days then overnight frost same issue. Just had the TB + Plenum removed today so look forward to see what occurs. The reason I'm asking is i've read on some US Forums similar results there in cold conditions, I guess its conceivable that the greater volume of incoming cold air messes the MAF about, just a wild guess ?

Simon,

It would seem that the DME is getting some out-of-tolerance data, although you said that you've had a remap which hasn't helped and which seems rather odd, but I assume that the revised set-up was done in a warm workshop. Low ambient temperatures appear to be the common denominator, so you could be right in assuming that the problem's air density related which would point to the MAF being the source of the error.

You've done a lot of engine mods and can never really tell what that's going to do until you try them - despite assurances from suppliers of individual pieces of kit.!

Edit: You've probably already seen this link:

It looks as though for starters you should check the wiring and that the MAF is seated correctly.

Thanks Jeff,

That Link is where I started to suspect the MAF was getting confused. In fact all the mods were done by the previous owner so from my temperature related guess I started to wonder because of the low mileage 9500 for a 2012 car possibly it had only been driven in the summer ? Which was confirmed pretty much by the garage yesterday. Hence it was OK until we had a drop in temperature early Sept. Car was running a treat today BTW, I need to get a service booked so maybe request a new MAF just as a future precaution. I agree about the warm workshop probably didn't help thats why I requested it to be left outside as much as possible before testing. Interesting if anyone runs those mods in colder climates ?

Cheers Simon

Simon,

It looks as though the previous owner might have gone the whole hog and had the Cargraphic Powerkit 4 fitted:

https://www.cargraphicts.com/en/brands/for-porsche/cayman/987/mk-2/performance/powerkits-for-987-cayman-r/

Not sure about the ECU upgrade though, as you say you've had your own remap? I would have thought that Cargraphic would have done sufficient development work to ensure that there would be no problems with a packaged kit, but it just goes to show that small outfits don't have the development resources available to the manufacturers to cover all eventualities.

I hope that now you're more or less back to standard on the intake side the problem will go away and that you can enjoy driving the car without concerns that it's going to default randomly to limp mode.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The garage did the Remap whilst trying to get to the root of the P1552 multiple errors, maybe the recent remap was just flashing the same software in case it had previously got corrupted somehow. Funny how the car was fine in mild/warm weather then went cranky when it got cooler. The Plenum + Throttle Body now been removed and the MAF checked out OK so at least its running fine again , so far confidence restored.

Simon
