GT4 - First Nürburgring Experience

After a really wet summer in Germany, the weather forecast this weekend looked half decent. I booked a hotel near the ring, and some lap tuition with Apex. This weekend is also the Old Timer GP. Arrived last night to see many, many gorgeous cars cruising around. The hotel car park filled up with some classic BMW’s while they ate dinner.

This isn’t my first time on track, and I’ve had tuition before. Places like Hockenheimring, Porsche Experience Centers and Prodrive are good but I am still a bit overawed by the ring. The roads in the area around echo the track, tight bends, elevation changes, random rain events… As the Germans say "nicht einfach!”

I am going to post some pics here of the exotics I see around town today. Hopefully will brighten your weekends wherever you are!

Well, that was quite an experience!

Managed laps between 11:20 (with several accidents on the track) and 09:55 when there was only one slowed section due to barrier repair. Tuition=magical. Can’t recommend Tomas at Apex highly enough. He got me round faster and was offering plenty of guidance in between laps. Turns out I put the power down too soon and don’t brake hard enough!

The GT4 absolutely surprised me, the limits of the car need a track to be seen. Turn in was possible at greater angles and at higher speeds than I’ve ever considered, and I like going fast! I had a lot of fun hearing someone shouting over the engine “Faster, trust me, dont lift! Push!”. Well, I think I’m going to be making this a regular trip. I’m only a few hours away and I now have the bug. Lots more tuition and many many laps?

Anyone want to come over and learn with me? Happy to set up a group event, as I speak German it’s pretty easy for me. Could be fun?

Sounds great, and would be an amazing experience I'm sure, although I think the issue for most would be getting insurance for the N-ring as a lot of insurances just do not insure for it.

Did you get one off insurance?

My policy here covers the Nurburgring as technically a toll road. I didn’t specifically time my lap, someone else sat next to me was keeping track. There was absolutely no racing going on. (Just about keeps me inside the rules I think…)
