GTS 4.0 -/-10mm suspension option

Hi folks

I am looking at purchasing a Cayman or Boxster GTS 4.0 and was able to spend a few hours driving one properly on B roads. It felt great, super controlled but compliant and I had it in Sports Plus most of the day, with the ride on poor B roads surprisingly good. Having seen the spec sheet for that particular vehicle I see that for some reason it has the -10mm suspension option, which might have been chosen in error as it actually raises the height by the same amount. That is because the standard PASM lowers the car by -20mm and the -10mm option reduced that drop. The way the option shows on the configurator is very misleading and I bet many buyers have selected the -10mm suspension option thinking they are lowering the car and making it handle better. The Porsche website says: "For slightly added driving comfort and ground clearance, the standard "PASM sports suspension (20 mm lowered”) is replaced with "Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) incl. ride height lowered by 10 mm” for no extra charge. With this option the ride height of the GTS 4.0 models rises compared to the standard set-up”

So, my question is... Is there anybody who can provide the technical differences to the springs/shocks/ARBs etc that makes this option more comfortable, or who can give some insight as to just how much difference that makes in feel/ride/handling? Having only driven this particular GTS 4.0 I don't know whether the standard setup would be much harsher and/or less controlled on my favoured B roads and whether in actual fact this option might actually be the better option? I've asked the salesman at the OPC and that was not helpful, he though the option dropped it -10mm too until I proved otherwise.

Hello Samwich,

I took delivery of my GTS 4.0 with 10mm option just 2 months ago. I can’t tell you what the exact technical spec is but only what I believe to be true from what I understood the option to be and what the OPC told me.
The GTS comes with a 20mm lower ride height than standard to aid the handling expected over the standard cars. The option lifts the general ride height by 10mm. It should not be thought that the ride height actually changes when the PASM button is used wether 10 or 20, It doesn’t. All that happens is that the dampers are stiffened. The reason for 10mm selection is for clearance over speed bumps etc. The poxy speed bumps still occasionally catch even with the 10mm.
What I can say though is that I had my car on a ramp at our local OPC at a regional club meeting to have an inquisitive look. To the untrained eye it looked like the top of the coil springs had polybush rings on them. Maybe this was how the 10mm difference is created, maybe it has nothing to do with it.
I wouldn’t be able to advise on handling, relative to 10mm or 20mm, as the car is way beyond my driving skills and I don’t have anything like the talents needed to appreciate it.
One thing that I would specify differently is to have the rear camera. I don’t like them from experience but the rear view is limited due to the raised profile behind the seats.

I’ve now done 9500 miles in a GTS4.0 with the standard -20mm suspension and in my view this has been perfectly judged for road use. I don’t have any trouble with anything catching apart from the plastic brake ducts that sit in front of the front wheels and these don’t matter.
The ride quality is extraordinarily good - it’s one of the the immediately noticeable feature of the car just how good the ride is.
I see no reason at all for specifying the -10mm option.
As others have confirmed, the sports suspension button (or choosing Sports Plus on the mode dial) doesn’t change the ride height, it just changes the programming of the PASM to make it slightly stiffer which is in benefit for track work.

Graham,

I rather like the Av green you have chosen though my better half says no. Are there many out there in that colour, did you see it in the flesh before ordering?

I have an order in for a -10 Boxster, drove a Cayman on -20 and a Boxster on -10 and the Cayman couldn't clear the speed humps where I live with two people in the car.

We love the Aventurine Green; it does look different in different lights though. Sometimes is looks grey other times more obviously green. I think it actually very classy colour and we’ve had a lot of nice comments, but that might just be people being kind.
Big advantage for me is that it doesn’t show the dirt!
We did see a Cayman in the showroom and a 992 in a damp and dreary car park before committing ourselves.
