What a decision! Looking at both models but not sure which to go for and what extras/options I really want but one question that does arise is what options can be ADDED after purchase!
So seeking comments on whether:-

1. Porsche Entry Drive was available on 981 and IF so, can it be added to a 981 or, if not on it, a 718?
2. If I purchase the most recent GT steering wheel with controls, can that be fitted (& functional) on both models?

and finally, if there is one,

3. Can cruise control be uprated to adaptive cruise?

In respect of values and desirabliity, my heart says a 981 GTS (& residual values) but I'm being drawn to the 718 GTS because of advanced specifications with sat nav, live traffic, internet connections, bluetooth etc!

I'd truly value some constructive feedback & comments? I've been spoilt buying (and looking to sell) a highly spec'd Macan GTS that has everything other than a tow bar, roof rails & vented seats and it's amazing but I now have two x 4WD vehicles and prefer a two-seater Porsche!

Don't dither about too much. In my experience you can agonise over engines, residuals, specs, colour etc for ages and worry yourself to death. If you see a car you like the look of and it ticks some boxes just get it and once you've got it you will think it's great!!! That's me talking after a few sleepless nights agonising over the 718S purchase- which by the way is fantastic!!!

Recently changed to a Boxster 981 GTS PDK it was a toss up between a 718T pdk.
After much deliberation Tracy went for a very high spec 981 GTS both were very similar in price from OPC.

Philip,

Regarding your choice of car, I think that Chris has got it nailed..!

On the other points I would suggest that the first port of call should be your Dealership who'll be able to give you a definitive answer ... and no doubt indicate the astronomical costs associated with the updates should they be available..! I'm not sure about items 1 and 3 - probably doubtful - but I would think that the latest steering wheel would be suitable for the 718 if not the 981.

With all the recent bad publicity associated with thefts of vehicles fitted with keyless entry I'm rather glad that I still have manual control over locking and unlocking my Cayman.

Buy the right spec car. I've looked into retrofitting Adaptive Cruise and whilst in theory it is doable (on a Macan) nobody has. Personally on a like for like basis I'd go for a 981 any day over the 718

Adaptive cruise ... ?????
You're buying one of the best driving cars in the world - if you want adaptive cruise, buy a Mercedes !

Hi Hoopster - I have adaptive cruise on my Macan GTS & my Audi Allroad, I don't drive in 'racing-mode' all of the time. Only when you've driven or have to drive on A. the M25 or B. on German motorways for long trips, which I do the former more than the latter, then you'll appreciate the benefits of having adaptive cruise and not having to continually anticipate what the car in front of that car is doing! It also has a switch so I can turn it off (lol). I kind of take your point though but it has the benefit of keeping me calm but ready to blast off up and over those amazing Austrian & Swiss mountain passes!

I reckon some form of cruise control should be a standard fitment and it's scandalous that - as a premium make - Porsche don't include it on all their cars. Gone are the times when the device was designed for "cruising" at constant speed on the highway. Rapidly increasing traffic density as well as the exponentially increasing use of average speed cameras - and lower speed limits in general - mean that some form of automatic speed control has become an essential part of modern motoring if you're to avoid speeding fines and punitive licence points.

I use (non-adaptive) cruise control all the time when driving my Cayman, particularly in built-up areas where it's very easy to exceed the posted speed limit in a high performance car and where in effect its use is as a hand-throttle. And as Philip has pointed out, if you have adaptive cruise control you can always turn it off.!

Personally I would go for the 981. Regarding cruise control, I don't really understand why anyone would want it on a sports car.

Both the 981 Cayman GTS, and the 718 Cayman GTS are mega cars. Having tested both cars, the 718 is definitely a further incremental development in all dynamic areas, plus of course the infotainment and electronic advantages. The final choice is entirely yours to make. Either way you'll not be disappointed.

I wouldn't bother with keyless entry.

I disagree with Gary on cruise control. On my tours south of the border on the A9 and M74 cruise control is a vital driving licence protector. Provided traffic density allows, I set cruise a few mph above the displayed speedo reading. Say, 62mph and 74 mph. This gives you sufficient speed differential to overtake those who drive at 58mph and 68mph without hanging around too much.
