Hi all,

first all loving every minute of being back in a 951, especially one that handles like Slim's old one.

but i have a query: the temp gauge runs low, I think, probably about 65degrees most of the time, whether in london traffic or cruising down the motorway.

Now, I know some 944's do seem to run that cool according to the stickie, but what hints at a problem is the fact that the petrol guage also runs low. When you fill the tank full, it sits at 3/4 full, until the petrol catches up to that point and then the needle carries on as normal.

Is there something common to these two guages that could casue this to happen, apart form the housing?

Any thoughts appreciated

Mine does exactly the same.

Ran it down to below the "R" on the tank, and it only took 60 litres (should be 80?)

Also, the temp guage only just gets above the first white line - very rarely gets near half, even though the fans sometime stay on when I stop the car, so I guess it's hoter than the temp guage says!!

There's a well lauded fix on the 3/4 tank issue. Apparently, you take out the gauges, and on each dial on the back, there is a rugby-ball shaped connector with a nut holding it in. remove the nut, clean up the poles on the connector, and replace. ("Slight" abbreviation of the pelican parts tech article!).

Now personally, I've had the dials apart about 10 times (Playing with custom dials!), each time cleaning the connectors and it hasn't made a slight bit of difference!

I also reckon 99.9% (except for lucky old Fen of course) have a tank gauge that reads 3/4 full. Personally, I don't worry about fuel until it gets to at least 1/2 (when travelling over Europe) or until the light comes on (when travelling to the shops!). so I didn't even notice it for 3 years until someone from Rennlist pointed out it was a common fault!

Oh and as for the temp gauge, I had the same problem as you (indicating a constant figure when "warm" at any ambient temperature or traffic situation). Unfortunately I can't remember how I fixed it. I do recall I bled the cooling system through (though I don't know why... it was a while ago!) and I'm sure it was nothing to do with the gauge itself.

I've got a very wise mechanic in Bob at RGA in Vauxhall, i'll mention it to him but if it's going to be a lot of trouble (and CASH) then i guess i can live with it.

It's just that i was intending to fit one of flamingeye's illumination kits, so while it's all out..

i'll let you know how it goes
 
I'll get a good quality shot of mine reading full then you can print it out, laminate it and stick it over the gauge with blu-tack for the first 75 miles after you fill up [:D]
 


Cheers Fen, that should sort it! Or i could just make sure i never put more than 3/4 tank in it (which might not be hard with the price of petrol)
 
Mine also reads full but I have to work quite hard to get the last few litres in, put them in slow, it gurgles a bit then more goes in,

My Turbos a full reader but the S2 is a 3/4 fanatic.

I have read that the sender in the fuel tank can get dirty and will respond to a clean. My Turbo actually got better by itself after I started using Optimax, my only guess is the cleaning properties did their job. Try brimming it with Opti and then not using it for a few days?
