Guards Red

Hi guys.

I was in halfrauds today and asked for some guards red paint to be made up. He said that it was not on their 'system' ([;)]) under that name so I went and got the paint code from my 944. When I told him the paint code he brought up the details on the pc screen and said that they cant make guards red as it contains lead.

My question is this - Have porsche produced a clone of guards red which is lead free and if so does anyone have the name/paint code?

many thanks in advance.

When I had my 924s in Guards Red, I had the same problem. Got some made up from a car shop in Clapham, cant remember what the code was, sure someone will be able to help on here.

If it helps, If you are anywhere near Croydon, I have a can you can have if you want to collect!.

Called Indischrot (Indian Red) for some model years, but the code remained the same. Id suggest an alternative supplier.

The sticker/plate on the boot states LM3A. Apparently a lot of paint suppliers are stopping producing paints with lead in them (not sure if it is 'law' yet). I just would have expected porsche to come up with a code for a lead free equivalent. I appreciate that it may not be 100% identical in terms of colour but if all paint producers/mixers suddenly ceased producing lead based paints then what are you meant to do? Simply look for an alternative red from the halfords rattle cans?

There was a thread a couple of weeks back stating who manufactured the cans that Porscheshop sell, IIRC they were a fair bit cheaper too.

Dont know how much porscheshop sell them for, but I got them for about £6!.
Bloody good match also........!

Whatever you use your cars colour will have changed to a greater or lesser extent.

The nearest that I can find to mine is Ford Rosso... No kidding.

Here ya go, these are the people who supply 'porscheshop'. Half the price of what porscheshop sell them for too.

Cheers for that! I will contact them.

I still feel that the problem regarding the paint is still a valid one however that porsche should really address. If lead based paints are dying out for environmental reasons then porsche and indeed all car manufacturers surely owe it to vehicle owners to research a lead free alternative. Im sure modern paints used by porsche ARE lead-free but those owning older cars should not have difficulty obtaining touch up paints etc. While some paint suppliers still supply lead free paint so things are not critical yet, it will surely get this way.

The original paintwork doesn't have a clearcoat on top of the colour layer, hence it is much more susceptible to fading and colour differences. The flipside is that a decent machine polish can restore the paintwork to a showroom shine and a good wax will lock this in and protect the colour.

I've not heard of problems getting paint to the original code. I'd be surprised, though, if a pure Guards Red was an accurate colour match on any car after 20-plus years.

Couldn't any decent bodyshop match the paint exactly? [8|]

Am sure that they could. A friend of mine own a Chipsaway franchise and they have a paint spectrum analyser that allows them to perfectly mix and match any paint colour irrespective of age or condition, etc.
