Guidance

From afar I am happy to help... bit too far away to show up on the day though.

Easiest points to make

1) You've paid to be there, use your mirrors but don't panic when you first go out about what everyone else is doing in terms of speed, they will find their way around you if you are predictable.

2) Build up at your pace and your time

3) Take regular breaks to think about what you are doing and let the car cool, it's easy to get hooked on the adrenaline and keep pounding around, melting tyres and brakes and not improving.

4) Feel the car... lots of people tuck the cars away on track days as soon as it starts to rain, big mistake in my book as the wet gives you far more chance to explore limit at lower speed

5) Look carefully at track surroundings, decide where you can risk an off and where you can't. For example the corner on to the straight at Snetterton (Riches? I forget) has miles of tarmac run-off, this therefore is the place on the circuit where you can really lean on the car/brakes and discover limits. Each circuit has corners where you can do this, along with corners that need to be respected.

6) Use the full width of the track, when you turn into a corner, make sure u are doing so from right up against the white line.

7) Look thru the corner, focus on where you are going to exit, makes the apex easier to find.

8) HAVE FUN

Welcome to the addiction.... it's expensive from here I tell you!

Great advice Rich, I wish I had read that when I started at the Oulton Park RS day 18 months ago.

15 or so track days later, yes I am hooked [;)]

But what a reason to get up at 5.00am in a morning !!! [:D][:D][:D]

Looking for some guidance on the track, I am a total novice any help or guidance.

Come join us at a trackday ?

I'm always up for some warming up "lines" and passenger rides --- I still remember with some discomfort where I started, but you'll learn quickly and then start to find your own way.

Making progress is the fun of it [;)]

DSC I think you mean Sear, if you go off at Riches you end up in the turnip field!! :)

In addition,

Get tuition, if it is just the guys on the trackday, they will at the very least, help you with traffic, and show you the lines. Some are way better than that.

Do an open pit lane day (less pressure), and stick to 15min stints, so you dont get tired.

Skip the first 20mins (apart from sighting laps) of the day, and the first 20mins after lunch. thats when everyone goes out.

Skip the last 30mins, thats when you will be the most tired, pack up and go home after a good day.

Drive within your limits, and dont chase people

Oh and choose a day when one this lot will be going, as you will get far more out of it, and they will help you around.

Steve, as Chris says, come and join us at Oulton Park (I know you're local). Get yourself booked on the PCGB on November 3rd (form in your Porsche Post). The weather is normally still good at that time of year, there are usually only 40 cars or so booked on (so it's not busy), they're all Porsches and the driving etiquette is great.

You can sign up for short instruction sessions on the day or pre-book an instructor for the whole day - cost ranges between £200 and £400 depending on who you use (but you can share that cost with someone else if you prefer).

Thanks for replys, Oulton is not far for me so I will come in November.

Let us know when you have booked and I'll see about organising an instructor for us to share for the day, if you like?

i found it useful to have a passenger to keep an eye on some of the faster & lower stuff arriving behind me - easy to get caught up in what you are doing and forget to pull over = loads of frustrated and angry people at the least...at the worst you turn in to a caterfield/radical

also useful in giving you some guidance about when you are pushing too much/getting carried away

worth getting a day in at bedford as its low risk compared to many circuits...

Don't get drawn into following other people's lines through corners. If they get it wrong, you are going to be in the same boat a few seconds behind them.
