Theres no oil seal in that area - other than the obvious drive shaft at the front, the half shafts either side and the shift lever on the top at the back of the axle line.
There are a couple of rubber cover / bung type things in the bell type housing, but this area should be dry.
There is the drain and level / filler holes but they dont usually just start to leak.
My box leaked from the half shaft (bent trailing arm knocked out the bearing), but they seem to be fairly reliable.
The only way to be sure would be to look under it!

If you look at the 'box it is made of 3 sections. From the front; aluminium diff, iron gear case, aluminium end piece. There is a seal between part 2 and 3 that can leak with age. Silicone rubber fixed quite a large leak (but for how long I don't know). I wil be arranging for it to be fixed properly when time allows.
As for the grinding, it doesn't sound nice but, try topping up the gearbox as a starter.
