Had a 987 on loan

My 986S has just had the oil seperator (?) changed under warranty. I usually get a Cayenne, but this time they gave me a spanking new 987 2.7. I didn't really want a Boxster as I was worried it would make me want a 987.

I have to say, I was really impressed. The sound of the 2.7 is awesome and I love the fact that you can put the roof up or down up to 30mph. The body looks far more aggresive and it has all the modern features you'd expect like 'home lights'. I loved eveythng about it in fact so have arranged a drive in a 3.2 987 to see how I get on. My only slight niggle is the dash with the 'Kia' finish to the centre console.

Has anybody driven both the 987 3.2 and 2.7? Should I expect a huge difference?

I think I am going to be hankering after a 987......mine looked so dated parked next to it at the OPC tonight!

Not daft are they!

Remember the latest S is a 3.4, if you are thinking of changing for a new one. Driven both the 3.2S and (obviously) the 2.7. Difference, yes. Huge difference, no. The 3.2 engine is not as 'sweet' as the 2.7, but has more torque making it feel a little more responsive.

In normal day to day driving I don't feel it's a huge difference. But would we have bought an S if we could have stretched to it? - you bet.

I haven't had the pleasure of driving a Kia so I'm still happy with how mine looks [8D]

Hehe. Our second car is (don't laugh) a Kia Sorento. It's funny, but every time I sit in it I could swear I was in a bigger version of my beloved 986! [;)][:D]

Also, I'm loathed to take out a 987 for the same reason (losing the first flush of love for my 986), but in all honesty - modern they may look, but you can't take away the fact that the design and curves of the 986 is an absolute classic. The rear end especially. I LOVE IT!

The 987 just looks a bit "square" from behind. The 986 is definitely softer and more fluid in its lines, although the 987 looks more aggressive and dare I say a little better proportioned.

Pros and cons eh?

Can't agree more. Not taken with the 987 shape at all. Don't like the exaggerated styling. Just not as subtle as the 986 which must one day become a classic. Perhaps my 986 will start appreciating when it's 21 years old like my Golf GTI Mk.2.[:D]

No need to laugh. The Sorento is a fine car for the money. We are now on our second one and you're right about the cabin. Apparently Porsche did much of the design to make it into a European car so perhaps it's no wonder the dash looks familiar. It's got the opening window in the rear door as well just like the Cayenne.

While my wife has her love affair with the Sorento there's no danger to mine with the Boxster. I was recently loaned the Cayman 2.7 as a courtesy car but couldn't wait to get back to my MY03 Boxster2.7.
