Had The Roof Out Yesterday.... Plus Guess The Mystery Part!

Had my roof out for the first time today.

I don't know wheter to blame HP or Porsche,
I'm going to blame HP on this one.....

Not pictured, Garry, who had to walk.

And as a bonus, guess the mystery part!

It seems that Garry got his revenge for the morning
constitutional....


Here's a handy hint:
It's broken and means you're gonna have to get towed home!


"Black" June has not been good to me....

Faye (951) overheated in traffic one morning. (First public bedwetting)
Viktoria (S8) hit a pothole, bent a wheel and needed two tyres (££££)
Soonafter she started misfiring, needed a new ignition module (£ way too much)
And now Faye has failed me again.


Next June I'm staying in bed.

The mystery component is part of a photocopier that Garry placed under you car to get his own back... It is nothing to do with your Porsche at all. A standard motorcyclist trick to scare the unwary. Usually the person that puts it there will point and say "whats that under your car? Oh no, it looks like the interferance drivespring locking pin... if you drive it with that gone... (sharp intake of breathe)".

It's a left-handed wangelflinget. Fairly rare failure, but pricey.

Try your OPC. You could try a part from a breaker, but the odds are it's not going to be much better than the one that just broke. OPC Exeter will give you the normal forum discount.

Never heard of it being called a wangelflinget before. New one on me.

It holds the gearstick into the linkage (well, not any more!).

Without I can get the stick into all sorts of positions that seem quite wrong....

Little tricky to drive home when you can't select any gears...... [&:]
 
A Cortina I once had required you to hold the gear lever down when you changed gear, or it would fall out. You could lift the gearlever, complete with gaitor, clean off, leaving a view of the road and gearbox selector levers, with an associated huge increase in road and mechanical noise as you did so. I used to have great fun picking up hitchhikers, and once up to a suitable speed asking them if they could do me a favour, lifting out the gearlever and saying "hold onto this for me", ah, some of the faces[:D][:D][:D].

To your lh wangelflinget, I believe Jon Mitchell had some special hardened versions manufactured, how-ever, if you speak to him, you might be better off using the more common-or-garden component description (The wotsit pin wot holds the gearlever on), or even the Latin variation rather than technical terms used here.

I didn't know what it was from the photo (and now, with the description, I am still impressed that you boys recognised it!) The Left-handed wangelflinget was a joke, based on tref's post before mine ...

Still, I think we should be making our own traditions here, and I degree that this part shall henceforth hereby be known as a wangelflinget. [:)]

I agree, everything needs an appropriate name, and wangelflinget works for me. My excuse for not recognising it initially is that it is not meant to be that shape!!!! You can use that one too...

Looks like we are going to have to visit the "Goldenhoor" for the complete linkage and lever before Sean fits the rebuilt box Thomas....!

Another wee question for the lads that we would need to know. Is the gearlinkage/lever the same on an 87 turbo as an 86 Lux...?

You know, having just looked back at some old posts from a number of years ago, you are right. I have been incredibly unobservant for the last 3 years or so (gosh, have I really been here that long?) so thanks for pointing out my omission.

'Wangelflinget' is much easier than 'Wanglewurflässt', I do agree. Hats off to the chap who translated it. [&:]

Newsflash!

I can confirm that yes, as expected, the linkage is the same as the lux and the turbo.

200 miles today in her and the gearshift is better than it ever was (2nd on the track took
some expert timing......)

I'm still gonna rebuild that box tho.... when funds show up that is [:mad:]
 
Going back to the cortina - my mate was driving his mums Capri 2000 GTXLR V4 Mark 1 when he was overcome by a fit of giggles the like of which I have never seen before or since (well over 30 years) as he lifted the gearstick and turned it upside down.
We completed the journey with me holding it in place at the relevent times.
