handbrake problem ...

Had the S2 in for MOT today and the parking brake was failed because of below requirement efficiency. The guy at the MOT station can only measure 86kg on each of the rear brake when the brake handle wad pulled to its maximum clicks (3 clicks). I will bring it in for a check and adjustment tomorrow.

I had the same problem in the last MOT where the garage adjusted them last time and then passed the retest. Just wonder if there is a known issue/problem with the parking brake on S2s and how often do they need adjusting. Please advice.

Mine's needed adjustment for every MOT I've put it through but it holds the car okay for the rest of the year. I guess I pull it too hard & the cable stretches.

They shouldn't really need adjusting much at all, the handbrake is a separate set of shoes from the normal brake so they don't wear assuming you don't use the handbrake to slow down [;)]

They do get rusty however and the cable will stretch.

have you adjusted the rear shoes? check what to do on clarks garage. i'm sure the 3 clicks thing is a bit outdated, i think it is ok as long as it holds with clicks to spare.

I had the same problem last MOT, i rubbed the handbrake shoes and disc insides down with emery paper and drove it around for a bit with the handbrake on a few clicks. sorted it ok.

Just sorted mine out. If you take wheel off you'll see a hole about same size a 20p. turn the hub until its at the top. Shine a torch in the hole you'll see some teeth these need turning so that the bottom tooth moved away from you. Do this until the hub becomes stiff to turn. Then back the toothed nut off a little 2 teeth should be enough. Then try your hand brake. Same method of adjustment as a vw beetle (old one) that is.

Got them sorted now. The guy gave the shoes a good clean and a retest showed a 20% which is 4% higher than the minimum req.
