Handbrake

I pulled the handbrake today, and got a snapping sound and now no handbrake...

Probably the cable, I guess everything else is stronger and the cable fails first, but I believe the cable is two parts. Is there a likely fail of one side, or am I better off just replacing the whole lot, and getting the shoes etc. done at the same time?
 
I did both cables when I did mine they aren't too expensive, I bought mine from Euro Car parts £80 for the two last year
 
Probably is one of the cables but that doesn't mean the shoes, etc. are worn out also. Really not much wear on the shoes if you just use them as a parking brake so I'd check it out before jumping in on the rest of the system.
