Handling Characteristic's Changed

Hi,

I have just change my wheels & tyres from targa split rims with conti sports all round to cup 3's with P zero's (directionable) on the front & P Rosso's on the back. The tyre size's have remained the same along with the rim size's, BUT the car handles so different has anyone else had the same thing or could shed some advice or knowledge, the cup 3 rims and tyres came from a 996 and are the correct size and ET, so I presume it's just the characteristic's of the tyres?

Any words of wisdom would be great......or is it just my imagination?[8|]

Maurice,

I did do my research or so I thought[8|] and was assured that these tyres would be fine for my 993 they did come off 1 car this being a 996 as I understand it was also the correct tyre combination for that as well, may I ask what you think I should put on the front? Your link quotes this:
Pirelli special case : Direcionale N2 Front, Asimmetrico N2 Rear (this combination seem no longer available, Dec 05)

Which is similar to what I have at the mo- Direcionale N2 Front & P Zero Rosso's N3 Rear so please explain the issue as I am very confused!![X(]

Hi Ian,

17" Offset 55 all round same as my other rims does the tyre combination make that much difference?? as they are nearly correct I get the feeling that the previous owner had new tyres fitted to either back or front but did not get the right match of Pirelli according to the Pirelli website & Maurice. Do I really need to rush out and change the fronts??[8|] Is it possible that as the fronts only have 4 mm left on them that they have worn to the camber of the previous car (996) which is why the front handles so differently? I presume the camber of the 996 is different to that of the 993?

You don't say HOW the handling has changed -we all assume for the worse?

Check with Pirelli that the Zero/Rosso mix is 'allowed'. I think you will find that they are not compatible -it's know as the P Zero Sytem and tyres such as Asymetricos and Direczionale are designed to work together.

I assume from the tread depth that they are not new tyres........some tyres seem to change during their wear cycle and suit themselves to a particular vehicle.....may be the case here...and also, how old are they?? Anything approaching five years should be binned anyway.

And N2 and N3 is NOT similar -you should not mix N ratings....full stop. See Maurice's article...............

And when was the last time you had a full four wheel alignment?

Check also the thread under "new tyres" where LWR (see second page) had a lot to say about changing over from Contis to P Zeros. And none of it was good. Though sounds as though Maurice has pointed out the most likely problem.

Hi Maurice,

Yes I take your point[8|] but you are right in suggesting that I only really wanted the wheels the tyres were optional and as they were P zero's I thought I had struck lucky......obviously not [&:] anyway I think I will put up with the handling for now it's not that bad just a little strange compared to driving on Conti's but some of that might be me[:-]

Thanks for the advice when I want tyres I think it will be Mich Pilots so much easier to match up[;)]

Michelin Pilot Sport N2's for the 993 are Porsche special pattern only and not the PS 1 or PS2 as the mass market have []

although they seem to work fine and quite easy to match up..... and they are fairly hard so they should last a while, but hopefully 'they' might give the PS2's the necessary N rating in the correct size in the future ?

but on the issue from switching from targa rims to cup 3's.. have you considered the weight reduction you are benefitting from ? as those targa rims are damn heavy, can't recall the exact saving but it could at least 15kg with those light cup 3's.... more or less...

Hi Sundeep,

Yes your right I had forgotten about the weight reduction[] they might account for some of the change do you think it would be a good idea to get the front re-tracked? I realise that the tyres are not quite what they should be but with only 4mm left on them (Back & Front) I might as well run them out to 2mm then change them they have probably all worn to the characteristic's of the 996 that they came from anyway. What tyre combination are you running?

the irony is that these are the only 4 tyres available in N spec for those sizes !

so not much of a recommendation ! [&:]

summer 04... any sign of the 2005 list ? [:-]
