I have recently purchased a 944 S2. I do think the handling is quite as it should be. Above 60mph it does not feel as planted and stable as I think it should do. At 80 - 100mph on a dual carriageway / motorway I am having to make quite a lot of corrections to the steering as the car seems to wallow and feels light on the front end. It is running Contis on the fronts and Bridgetones on the rears. The suspension was changed about 30K ago so I think the shocks should be in ok. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Other than the handling the car is great but this really needs to be sorted out because it is spoiling my enjoyment of what should be a lovely car to drive.
 
Mixed makes of tyres won't help the handling, but I would get the geometry checked out first. That can transform the car, once set up correctly as every element on the 944 can be configured.
 
A 944 should feel totally planted at 100 (and more ;), so somethings not right.

Why and what was changed on the suspension ?, don't dissmiss new parts from diagnosis. I had a partially seized damper on an STi that had only done 3k miles, made the car feel very strange.

Tyres can make a big difference and can amplify alignment problems, but as above, get it to a shop with the full 4wheel alignment stuff and start from there.
 
BTW, I need to replace the polo daily driver with something a bit more interesting.

Thinking of a 944 (968's seem to attract silly prices), what should I look out for and what could I expect for about 5k ?
 
It should feel very planted at highly illegal speeds so something is not quite right.

Is the underspoiler that goes under the engine missing, maybe there is some lift being generated at high speed?

A good alignment should be done every couple of years as well. All the settings are highly adjustable and they can 'wander' out of true
 
Not sure why the shocks were changed because it was done by the previous owner. I have booked the bar in with Portiacraft so hopefully they will be able to sort it for me.
 
Thanks for the link, interesting reading. I don't like the idea of running unmatched tyres so was thinking of treating the car to a new set.

It should have been one of the first things I checked when I picked the car up but because it had just gone through an MOT and the service history was faultless and the owner seemeed so diligent... Lessons to be learnt I think....

The car seems much better now...

That's hilarious. Reminds me of a part in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'. 67psi is a record from what I've heard.

No wonder it was handling poorly, reminds me of my mates Dad who was not mechanically minded, inflated all his tyres on his brand new Vauxhall Astra to 60 psi and found himself in the farmers field at the first corner[:mad:]. Tyres were standing on the bristles............now where's that tyre gauge.....[;)]
