Hi
I have a 2005, Gen 2 Boxster 987 (2006 build model), I have seen a hard top on ebay which has come off a 2009 Boxster 987. Porsche say they did not produce hardtops for the 987. Question is will it fit my Boxster?

When you say a 987 Boxster gen 2, it usually means its a 2nd generation of the 987, not the Boxster itself.

First generation Boxsters were called 986. 1997-2004

Then the 987 Boxster was released in 2005-08 (called a gen 1 987, or 987.1 Boxster)

Slight revisions on the same body 2009-2012 (called a gen 2 987, or 987.2 Boxster)

The 981 is the 3rd iteration of Boxster, being a different shape to the 986 and 987.

Current one is the 718, which loses the flat six engines and goes for blown four pots. Very similar shape to a 981 but subtle differences again.

I have just bought a secondhand hardtop for a 987 Boxster. They're shown in the 987 promotional material, but are much less common that those for 986's, apparently because the 987 soft top is a double layer one and more durable and quieter than the 986. You'll also need to retrofit the hardtop lock cylinders so that the rear spinlocks can be locked in position. they're about £100 or so from an OPC with members discount and 2-3 hours DIY to fit. It requires the soft-top to be put into the service position and the lever mechanism to be partially unbolted in order to get clearance to tighten the fitting bolts in. It's pretty straightforward with the aid of a good "how to" guide from t'internet. The most difficult bit was getting a couple of bits of internal trim around the seat belts back on!

Having now fitted the hard top, I suspect it is a 986 one! The top secures properl, but the profile around the rear of the windows isn’t right and the glass doesn’t follow the moulded lines on the rubber seals as it looks like it was intended…the seller seemed a reasonable guy so he may well have sold it in good faith having bought it with his car (assuming he had no leakage problems). The doors shut and close and the glass raises as intended. Does anybody know where the part number is marked on the hard top? I didn’t see one obvious prior to fitting it but then I wasn’t looking for it. Now to get the hose out and do a leak test. It may be that a 986 top does fit a 987, and there’s just enough contact between the glass and the forward part of the seals to keep the water out.

I looked into a hard top for my 2009 987.2 some time ago.

The general conclusion was there isn't one for the Gen 2 but there was for the Gen1.

Maybe it was just the sealing issue?

I have 2010 987.2 in Guards Red that came with a hard top. I mounted it once to bring back from the OPC, then bought a cover and stand where it is today.

So, they may be rare for gen2, but they certainly exist.

Update: It is a 987 one. Having spent a long time viewing different photos of 986/987 hardtops they are a different profile around the windows, with 986 much more rounded, and 987 more squared off at the rear of the doors in order to accommodate the different window profile. This is apparently a change to improve rearwards visibility over the shoulder. What foxed me was that when it came to me, one of the number of different profiles of rubber sealing was folded over the correct flocked door seal on both sides. This meant that there was no way it would have been waterproof and barely covered the gap between glass and the wrong sealing face. Secondly, the window only retracts upward into a "u"shaped firm rubber profile at the top of the window, and the line of this continues rearwards and about 1" behind the rear portion of the glass when closed, slowly petering out. It looks like the window glass should follow it, but it doesn't. No leaking so far after a day of torrential rain, so all seems well to date. 6 hour drive there and back to the Castle Coombe classic this weekend should give noise reduction and watertightness a good test on the M4. Re the 997.1./2 question above. The 987 Boxster is the second Boxster model after the 986. However, following the 987 facelift in 2009, they are commonly referred to as the 987.1 and 987.2 to differentiate them. 987.2 is not the second Boxster model; it's the facelifted version of the second Boxster model. Hard tops are rare for 987's, but they fit both the original and facelifted models.

Hi,

Are you able to upload a photo of yours so i can see the difference?

Looking at one soon for my 987 and want to make sure it's the right one.

Thanks
