Hello all
I bought some new speakers for the front as i am fed up of tinny music since i turned the bass down to stop the knackered originals farting. This i know is a quicky swap.
However im thinking while im there i might take the door cards off, clean up and lubricate the mechs as my windows are s.....l........o........w.
Also what i realised the other day is i think some of the door card's fixing screws are missing.
Bearing in mind ive never done this on a 944 before are there any pointers please? also can i get the correct screws for the doors im not a fan of the bung a wood screw in mentality.
thank you all
Mark

I'm afraid I can't help with tips on how to get the mechanism out because I got someone to do that for me but I can tell you that the door card comes off pretty easily and cleaning/ lubricating the mechanisms really does work. My passenger side window barely moved when I bought my car and a local chap I use got it to operate respectably just by cleaning it up. No parts required:)

I think the door card screws are self-tappers, with a collar at the top to allow you to clip the cover over. Any sort of self-tapper will do if you don't have (or don't want) the covers.

Door windows are always slow on 944's. I'm not sure why - probably a combination of tired motors, cruddy grease, build-up of dirt and not-great wiring. I cleaned up the drivers side one on mine last summer as the door bar was loose and needed tightening (and doing this involved dismantling much of the winder mechanism), and it improved things a little. Not hugely, but a little. That was a simple clean and re-grease.

Oli.

I had an issue with one window which was slower than the other (passenger). Lubricating the mechanism certainly helped, but it's still not as quick as the driver's side. After watching that bloke Ed on Wheeler Dealers have a similar issue (not sure what car) he sprayed some silicone spray into the guides and this appeared to work. I have since bought some on eBay "" but have not had time to have a go yet. I am reckoning I will be better off removing the door card to spray it into the whole window channel...

Just fitted a new motor and window mech and to be honest it's a bugger of a job but nothing the average diy mechanic couldn't do over a weekend. I ran the motors with no window and there pretty quick so its either the weight of the window itself or the runners being messed up with 20 odd years of crud.

I had the drivers side mechanism fail on me, so decided to remove it so I could check it. It's not easy to maneuver the mechanism out of lower opening, but with a bit of perseverance it will come out. The mechanism was stuck solid - so I split the motor from the mechanism and using so flying leads tested it accross the battery. It worked - so I greased up the mechanism, refitted the motor and tested the unit across the battery again..... And it worked. The hardest part was reattaching the glass to the mechanism, but I eventually got it back in. Took me about 4 hours start to finish with a few coffee breaks thrown in.[;)]

I'm in the process of completely stripping and cleaning my interior, and I'm a bit of a fusspot about getting the right screws in the right place too.

I contacted soemone braking a 944 on ebay (there's usually at least half a dozen at any given time) and asked them to supply me with as many screws and old clips etc as possible. I was buying some other bits from him anyway, so he gave be a bag full of screws for free.

this way I had a selection of screws to hand when re building.

I can confim that removing the winder motor is a real PITA! but it can be lubricated in situ.[;)]
