Chaps,
In the last 10 days, I have had seven people either want to buy my S2 from me or stop me to talk about it. I haven't taken to wearing any sillier hats than usual and neither has anyone written anything rude on the back of my car (I've checked) so I am wondering what has caused it. A case in point was this morning, when I had two new tyres fitted. Bought on-line, fitted by a place I'd never been to before in Stoke Newington. The guy who ran the fitting place was very complimentary about the car. As was the guy who fitted the new tyres. As were the three other fitters in there. To the extent that one of them asked whether they could have a group photo taken by the car and handed me his phone to take it.
A nice story to retell, and great for my (already vast) ego, but one of a number of similar events. I went to Canary Wharf last Friday, and for the first time ever was stopped by the security chaps on the way in. They asked where I was going (Waitrose and also to take some shirts back) and would I mind if they did an inspection of the car? No, of course I wouldn't, so I got out and wandered around it with them until it became clear that they had no security interest in the car, merely that they wanted a closer look! Five minutes of nice chat later (I wasn't in a hurry) and I was allowed to go on my way.
On Saturday, I parked it outside a cafe in Shoreditch just as a guy pulled up on his Harley Davidson and dismounted. He said "Nice car mate", to which I responded "Nice bike!" We chatted for a while before realising that there was not one but two table-loads of workmen in the cafe admiring the car (and bike) through the window, one of whom was taking photos on his 'phone. Later in the day I attended to the car's slight drink problem and, while I was filling up, the guy filling up next to me asked whether his son (aged somewhere between birth and university, I can't really tell) would be allowed to sit in the 944 for a few minutes. Of course I was delighted and even showed him how to make the headlights pop up and down. Aforementioned kid was chuffed to bits and I had done my good deed for the day.
Has there been some kind of 'The Car's the Star' series about the 944 recently? Or has a 944 has featured in some prominent position of late? I am aware that a 944 was on on Top Gear a while back but it must be more than that. I don't watch TV but there must be some kind of popular media explanation for why 944's have suddenly garnered so much attention. Mine's a nice one, sure, but not that nice, not new, not that shiny (although I did wash it last week) and certainly not flashy. Is anyone else having the same problem?
Oli.
