Has you car had a engine rebuild and what mileage?

What I have noticed with a fair number of 964s I have seen, the common faults where the oil leaks.

I would like to know from you guys is, what sort of mileage have your cars had an engine rebuild?

As my friends car has been well maintained for 140k miles and still running strong with no leaks (touch wood), when is expected for a rebuild? Or is this a question of 'How long is a piece of string?'

Opinions vary, but it is usual that the heads show valve wear at between 50,00 and 80,000 miles. The base of the engine is longer life - and 100,00 to 150,000 is fine unless something bad happened - oil starvation or scratchy bits - the main bearings can get scratched and then fail. When I had my rebuild, I had some value guide wear, then found one of the cams lobes scratched and nothing needed for the lower apart although new shells were fitted. That was at 62k miles or so. The piston rings etc were ok although new rings made sense. Oil leaks can happen anytime and fall into two categories - leaks from the barrel/head area, and the main crankcase split: not good. Leaks from the crankshaft seals, chest gaskets etc: engine out but not as bad as the first two. Leaks from cam covers etc: easier to deal with. Some 'sweat' is fine, drips are a little concern and should be looked at. You should check for leaks, valve guide wear and worn rings.
 
Mine had a mini top end rebuild at 125,000 miles (before I bought it at 150,000 miles and it's now done 160,000). The only consumables they put on were head gaskets and piston rings. The rest of it was more or less a polish up. Of course, it got a new clutch while the engine was out (its second). However what they didn't do was replace the 'tin ware' which would have been sensible while it was out because that will definitely have to be tackled at some point in the future.

While the early cars needed a top rebuild to cure oil leaks caused by them having no head gaskets (the original design), rebuilds are undertaken more due to engine wear (as described above by Alex) rather than to cure oil leaks. Therefore deciding whether to rebuild or not is better judged by having a leak down test. There are examples of cars in the States that have done 200,000+ miles without a rebuild.
 
does this same applies to a J-reg 964? heard this is a newer upgraded engine, am i correct in saying they were the same as the early 993 engine?
 
Registration is umimportant, engine number is the give away, Rennlist and Adrian Streathers book list the head gasket change over, but the head gasket is a bit of a red herring really.

Leaks occur at the base and rocker covers more than head/cyl faces....

120Kmiles I did a full rebuild ..engine ran, didn't burn oil but was allways "lumpy" and i could fix the issue and was starting to a weep oil quite a lot at different points

But basicaly :
1) Had one cam lobe very warn ..very common
2) Broken Valve spring ..the lumpy running ;-)
3) Main bearings etc were good but getting to the end of there life......

Since the rebuild i've carried out over 20,000miles, been to the South of France, LeMans and a Brandshatch track day, and its also, in "its" spare time used every day for work.
