Hatch glass seal? HELP!!

As you are probably aware these cars suffer from the black stuff at the top of the hatch (which I presume is a seal on the glass) from cracking and peeling away over time, leaving it looking a bit tatty. Being the picky person I am I feel mine should be dealt with before it gets too bad...

Does anyone know if there is a solution to this? Would it be a case of removing the hatch glass from the frame and renewing the seal or is there another remedy?

Edd

The only thing i've read involves alot of work. It involves stripping off the frame so you're left with just the glass of the hatch, then scraping off the residual black stuff and re-applying. Apparently you can buy the black stuff in a spray can, so you mask off and spray. Not sure if it is identical to the original, but looks pretty good once done. Then you need to scrape out the old sealant from the frame and re-apply that. The hatch squeaking is not the hatch pins - it is the glass hatch disbonding from the sealant in the frame and the squeaking occurs due to the glass rattling/rubbing within the surrounding frame. So a big job as by all accounts getting the hatch frame off is a real PITSA, but sounds like it is a pretty rewarding job if you've got the patients. There is another approach you can use which doesn't require the dismantling of the frame from the hatch. Use a flat tool and try to scrape out all the sealant you can from between the glass and the frame while the frame is still in-situ, and the black peeling border. You can then try to squeeze some fresh sealant inbetween the frame and the glass. Then you can mask off and spray the black border. I suspect the black border on the glass is there to give the sealing something to key off as I can't imagine it will stick that well to glass, so maybe method 2 above is not the best method for anything other than a cosmetic fix. I'm surprised there isn't some specialist or chap in a shed somewhere who hasn't capitalised on this. I can imagine if it is a job you've done a few times and you can develop a few techniques to make the job quicker and easier it would be a nice little pocket money earner. It could even be done on an exchange basis.

On both of my road turbos as part of the cosmetic work i did on them i had two black strip custom decals made up and applied to this area, it tidies it no end and only at close inspection do you realise its on the outside,it looks so much tidier, like it should be like it anyway if i remember i will take a picture and post it.

Thats exactly something I was thinking could be the easy fix, so it is possible....who did the decals and how much did they cost? Yes pictures please! Edd

I did speak to AutoGlass to seek their opinion, apparently the black tape is a mask to hide the sealant underneith, not something they usualy replace unfortunately. He also told me a replacement hatch glass would be Ă‚ÂŁ3500[:-] and that was assuming they could obtain one! I think the black vinyl tape seems the most economical way to go, Mark did they do yours in a whole piece down the sides as well or was is fitting in sections? Edd

Selbys Nottingham(the bodyshop i used for both the cars) had a bloke come in and make them on the spot ,i don't think they were expensive otherwise i would remember but on my red car it has lasted and looks like new for quite a few years now,and when i did the bodywork on the black car i did it straight away as it is a definite weak spot cosmetically on pretty much every 944 i have seen. What we should do is start a petition to Rick (Cannell) to manufacture a batch i am sure they would be popular..? I will try and take a picture tommorow[:)] Edited to add, pretty sure its 3 sections... one across the top and two bits either side with the curve in them.If its done neat it really looks ok and does not look out of place,a definite improvement i reckon.

I think you can see it sort of in this shot?

I will take another shot tommorow, more close up (before anyone mentions the low turbo badge it has been moved to the correct position as per the 1990 brochure[:D])

When I had the hatch off my old s2 I just cleaned the inside of the hatch with white spirits and a rag,all the loose stuff that is going to fall off will be removed,do not be too rough just remove all the parts that are peelng or are going to peel, after careful masking to follow the line of where the black would be I sprayed the whole alloy frame and the glass with simoniz extra tough satin black, you cannot use primer as it will show through the glass but this was done about a year ago and still looks good, hope this helps all the best John.

Funnily enough I mentioned this exact issue to Rick last week, when I called for fitting guidance for my sunstrip. He said it is 'on his list' but that it is a very long list!

Perhaps Rick will be along in a moment as he is sometimes a visitor to these parts... I'm sure there would be enough interest here to make the fabrication of a decal worthwhile? Edd

If you go on the retro rides web site a guy on it called 'Isle of Wight Graphics' will make any stickers up for a low price. It's worth a go.

Ok I have been busy emailing some vehical decal and wrapping companys with the idea of providing a solution for this issue. So far I have heard back from 3 of them. As my car is currently at the bodyshop could someone quicky provide me with the rough dimensions of the hatch so a price quote can be given? A car will need to be seen before the design can be made, so I may need a volunteer or two should my car be delayed or if the company is based some distance away (one of them is in Merseyside). Edd

Come on guys I'm trying to do something for us all here, surely someone can just measure the length and width of the rear hatch for me? PLEASE! Edd

If you can clarify exactly what you want I'll go out and measure mine now for you. Length - middle of the glass from tip of glass under the spoiler (mine has a bridge spoiler) to tip of glass before the frame by the roof? Width - middle of glass with a hovering i.e. straight rule or do you want the survature taken into account too? Those measurements would only be very rough as of course the rear hatch is not a simple shape. EDIT: Looks like I was beaten to it, that's the trouble with being a slow typer!

I only need a rough measurement thanks, yes from edge of glass top to bottom and side to side. Its just to get an idea on cost from one of the companies I'm using. I plan on taking my car to them one its back to get the design made up and final price. Group buy anyone?

yeah id definately be up for that mine bugs me its only at the top though, taken some rough measurements, like has been said already need a tailors tape really but here goes
hatchdim.jpg
A=115 cm B=102.8 cm C=133.5 cm again this is for a bridge spolier outer seal to outer seal so might be slightly different on individual cars
