Hatch Struts - correct fitting?

Just getting round to trying to make the HRW work when I noticed the PO had the gas struts fitted so the base of the n/s strut was on the body side while the base of the o/s strut was on the glass side.
Which is correct?

o/s part number 944 512 348
n/s part number 944 512 349
so I think they are OEM.

Any help gratefully accepted - thanks.

agree with Colin - my factory S2 struts are base to the car body both sides. Probably doesn't make a difference if your rear window heater works but makes you wonder what the tech was "thinking" that day...

Yes, base to the body is what I would have thought but a quick trawl of the net for 944 images shows them mostly base to the glass!!
Also although the workshop manual doesn't show (I couldn't find it) the rear hatch strut positions it does show the bonnet struts and they are base to the bonnet.

There is presumably a correct way of fitting for the rear ones to get the HRW working and to allow the boot light to go off when you shut the hatch?
