As I backed the 911E out of its Kensington kennel , working all four limbs in a multitasking medley of simultaneously balancing throttle and clutch and putting a bit of steering on and winding down the driver's window......the window winder went from being stiff and awkward to failing altogether....leaving the window stuck down [8|].
I had arranged to visit Nick Moss later in the day at 'early 911' , purely a social call to see his premises and the projects on hand and learn a bit more about restoration of early cars. Prior to that I had a full day of family visits and a fair bit of M25 to negotiate , so having an open window was not ideal....managed to pull it up by gripping the glass , and set off.
I arrived at Nick's place which is a good challenge for any satnav system , especially mine as it died for lack of charge from the cigar lighter en route....I was somewhat late. However , Nick kindly stopped what he was doing and set about stripping my drivers door / window frame , removing the winder mechanism to find that the pivot bush that carries the coil spring had failed.
He managed to improvise a replacement bush , reassemble everything, getting hands and arms well and truly messed with residual waxoyl...so that I could continue my travels. Brilliant ! [
