Have You Managed to Fit a Porsche Fan Belt ....

...for the 924? If so, how did you get in onto the pulleys without using a crowbar?

The belts from Porsche dealers are slightly wider than other suppliers but not as long!

Incidentally does anyone know what car they come from - audi/volkswagen?
 
There are apparently differing diameter pulleys that account for this. Take your short belt to a motor factors and ask for one a bit longer. Any V belt of the right length will do.

The Halfords belt and those of motor factos across the country where I've shed belts are slightly thinner than the one supplied from Porsche dealers which fit better and presumably correctly.

If the Halfords belt for the 924 is the same as their belt for the Audi 100 either that belt is slightly thinner than the OEM Audi 100 belt or else the Audi 100 belt isn't the one branded as Porsche sold by the dealer.

I'll think I'll call up the Porsche dealer - after all , their belt was 5 times the cost of the Halfords belt!

 
there are 3 belts use on the 924 depending on year, biggest trouble with belts on 924 is worn rubber bushes on altinator
 
Bushes were replaced some time ago.

Called the Porsche dealer. They say the belts don't just slip on (like normal cars!) and they manually turn the cranksahft pulley while the belt is on two pulleys and that pulls it onto the third.
 
Actually getting the belt on is quite easy if you remember to loosen the waterpump pulley bolts (three off) before you take the old belt off. If the belt has broken then use the belt to wrap around the pulley to help you hold it still. Remove the pulley from the pump flange, and slacken all the adjusters obviously. Put the belt around the other two pulleys first, then slip it into the waterpump pulley and offer it up to the water pump istelf and replace the three bolts. After that you are on your own.

Yes that's eventually how we did it. I was quite surprised that the pulley lined up easily after the belt was put on it, and the tension was correct at its loosest point!

The Porsche garage say they used to do it from underneath, manually turning a pulley to lift the belt on.
