So im thinking my Head Gasket may be just starting to show signs of failing, lack of use over the years im sure hasn't helped.

So what is the going rate for a head gasket replacement, belts where done 500 miles ago which is about a year ! just getting an idea before i look where to take it.

What model? Lux/S/S2/Turbo?

Are you doing the work yourself or paying someone else to do it?

Do you just want to swap the gaskets or would you like the head refreshed as well?

No time sadly ! so need to find someone, just gaskets no head refresh ? std 2.5 lux

Gaskets will be about £120 or so. You're probably looking at around 5 hours of labour at £80/hour (bit of a guess) so maybe £400.

Which is £520 all in. Maybe plus VAT. And definitely plus-or-minus about 50% as it's quite approximate ....

Thanks Oli

thats what i was thinking, but after my first quote i was wondering if i was miles wrong, first garage quoted £1000 to £1500 just seamed a bit expensive to me.

Where are you? Labour rates vary quite widely, there's an indie I spoke to in Crowborough last year who was at the time £55+VAT per hour yet my closest indie (P9 in Marden) was £73+VAT per hour, local OPC £90+VAT!. Also parts - not sure about head gasket, but I know camshaft/balance shaft rollers and belts for a 968 are twice the price if you want them in Porsche packaging rather than in original manufacturers packaging from a well known factor.

Im near Brands Hatch

So - your closest indie is probably La Rose in Kemsing, where I think PCGB members get discount. However, they're always busy so you may have to wait a while to get the car in to them. Octane Garage in Crowborough has good reports from a 968 owner in Tunbridge Wells, as does Precision Porsche in Uckfield. Always worth an ask at Porsche Tonbridge or East London, whichever is closest to you!

I did mine myself, since it gave me an opportunity to spend more time and attention on other areas. Wasn't overly tricky, and I have a 951.
There are a number of connections, and rubber parts I decided to service due to the access, and gave me a chance to inspect many different parts while I had the chance.

Cost in parts was around £200, labour wise I'd expect £500 from a garage, but I'd recommend a few other jobs being done while you are in there - not least the thermostat which is a bugger of a job!
Happy to help if you're going down the DIY route.
