Head gasket sealant

The head gasket on the Rover V8 is dead easy to change anyway. I once did one at night in the paddock of Pembrey race circuit by the light of a Land Rover inspection light. It was rather fun actually. []

Totally agree with James. Any such product can oly act as a stop gap at best, and given time, very probably exacerbate the underlying problem. If you intend to keep using the engine the only sensible thing to do is go for a replacement head gasket!

Of course the underlying problem is one rarely encountered in a 944 - complete saturation of the radiator in mud - which some lazy individual has neglected to jetwash out []
Out of interest is a reskim always necessary or can i get away with just a new gasket?

Given the cost of HG/skim I may just go for the 3.5 v8 replacement route which is far less prone to the fault than the 4.0 fitted.
Sorry to bang on about the RR but if you want an example of a useless car forum have a look at the US hosted RangeRover site - the difference in knowledge and useful comment between that site and ths one is remarkable.

If you're going to replace the engine, John Eales has built me several (5 actually) very nice Rover V8s in varying displacements which were very nice. One of the larger capacities (4.6-5.0) would really suit the RR for offroad work. I know that he's built loads of engines for off roqaders, as well as circuit race cars. He often had secondhand engines for sale at a very reasonable cost.

It will depend on the nature of the problem / damage, and this cannot be determined until the cylinder head is removed. If it's a straight forward blown head gasket, and no significant additional damage has occured to the block or head, then replacing the gasket alone will sort it!

Unless you're just looking for an excuse for a new engine of course []

He's a very nice bloke when you get to know him, although he can appear a bit offhand at first. Once he knows that you know what you want and aren't wasting his time, he'll warm to you.
Tell him exactly what you want the engine for, and he'll build you exactly what you need. Which isn't necessarily what you think you need []
