Head unit change

Have recently bought a Pioneer Head unit for my SC and was wondering if i will need converters to change the Pioneer plugs to fit the Porsche loom or will it just plug straight in. I have an old Blaupunkt Bremen which i guess has different plugs to the Pioneer.

Also i have an automatic power aeriel will the connector (if needed) cater for that.

Thanks for help.

Andy.

Hiya

I have just put a JVC headunit in my 82 SC, there was no wiring loom just a bunch of seperate wires which we had to trace to find out what function they were we then wired them into a universal connector by splicing the wires with the wires from the connector (which we got off an old extension I had for a previous stereo) this then plugged straight into the back of the JVC unit.

If you have got a loom I would be surprised if it fits straight off, on previous cars I have always had to buy an adaptor to suit the cars loom.

Hope this helps
Jo

Hi Andy,

If you car still has the correct wiring (i.e. it hasn't had the original connecters cut off) you should be able to get a converter loom from autoleads or similar. Halfords sell these converters which allow you plug into a cars loom without cutting off the connecters. Ive used these converters on several occasions in the past (although not on my 911 - I had some very odd connections to say the least!) they make it easy to fit a new headunit, whilst allowing you to replace the original radio easily too and keeping the car original.

A recently bought headunit should have standard european 'din' connections, but I would imagine that the old blaupunkt will have different connections. To be sure if you take the car along with the radio to a local Road Radio or similar, they should be able to tell you what you would need converter wise.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for all advice, i will be doing my stereo on Saturday and hopefully i will have some sort of connector on the end of the Porsche loom or where it plugs into the old Blaupunkt, luck permitting i will be able to get an adaptor for either.

Thanks again.

Check and see if your car has still got the speaker wiring connected to the fader in the center console, you wont need this with a modern stereo. Also worth checking your speaker wiring as 20 years on its not going to be as good as it was.

Thanks, but i donr seem to have a fader in the centre console or even rear speakers for that matter.

I have today removed the original Blaupunkt Bremen Tape player from the car and as i suspected its not got a plug on the car side.[]
The new Pioneer CD player has a large plug on the end and the old stereo just had about 4 wires into it with electrical connectors.

I can buy an adapter and cut the non stereo end off the adapter off it and splice it in with the car loom if need be, but i need to try to keep the original loom as standard as possible so old stereo can be put back in if i ever sell the car.

Can anyone please tell what the 4 wires on the car side are there seems to be 3 that are the same colour (Brown or red) sorry but i'm a bit colour blind [:)] and there appears to be a white one - i think this is for the power ariel am i correct?
I guess the others are Live, switched live and earth. (seems strange that they are similar colours) can anyone confirm this?
Thanks, all help greatly appreciated.
