Head unit turmoil!

Hi

I am in total bewilderment at a problem i have with the head unit (CDR-23) constantly switching itself on and off, i replaced the head unit but much to my disappointment the switching problem was there, i then replaced the Becker 6600 amp and low n behold the problem is STILL there! I am at my wits end here and its proving a costly glitch, does anyone out there have a clue on this annoyance?

My friend has a c4s and his does the same but he has a head unit doing sat nav and phone etc. My other friend has a Audi garage and when cats come into him with that problem his straight away said the amps cause this problem. Did you buy a new or second hand amp? Also I have just taken out a CD-R 23 from my c4s and I know it works. If you bought your amp second hand I am willing to send you my old radio to try one or the other may have the same fault

Hey

Yep, i bought it second hand for McPorsche, they have been really good, i did buy another cdr23 but it does exactly the same thing as the old unit, so it may be another faulty amp? Maybe ill send it back to McPorsche as i know he has another one on the shelf, thanks for getting back to me on this, its driving me nuts.

If you have changed head unit and amp, have you considered the power supply? Does it do it when stationary, or only on the move? Maybe change the ignition switch, as they can cause all sorts of wierd electrical gremlins. Cheap part (£20-ish) and not too difficult to change. (DIY in the Technical Articles section).

Thanks for the advice, on the ignition switch solution, anything is worth a shot, its a new one on me but will give it a go.

No Change on the fault, the only thing i can see is that the fibre optic is flashing in time to the power going on and off? have checked all voltages and they are steady, looks like it is the fibre thats sending the signal to go on and off, god i dont even know what the fibre does, does anyone have any more ideas?

totally stumped here!!!

Maybe it is a break/fault in the fibre optic loop. Do you have a CD changer? Maybe worth checking the connections on that If you have one.

Hi Richard

had a good look at the fibre, got lights at amp and changer unit but the fibre signal coming out of the Head unit is the one that is pulsing, I am assuming that the head is the source for the signals to the other 2 units? It's the second head unit, so I'm thinking it's okay ?

Cheers

Yep my thoughts too, looks like ill replace the head unit with an after market one incorporating blue tooth, at least something good will come out of it all, pity it couldn't be fixed, i can't stand getting beat with tech props, i really should get a manual for the car but they are thin on the ground, i seen a set on eBay for £80.

Cheers

I've just put a pioneer sph da120 in my c4s it has car play so plays all my music has bloothtooth phone. Google maps it's great

I am having exactly the same issue with my CDR23 (03 Targa with Sound pack); switching off and on constantly, blinking fibre optic, with occasional popping and/or static noises coming through the speakers as well. Has done it only periodically in the past but has been constant now for the last 4 days.[:(]

Mine also has the added problem that it has a CD in the drive but is saying 'no disc' on the display and won't eject it! It's going into Cartronics in Byfleet (recommended to me by Porsche Brooklands) to be looked at.

Am toying with an upgrade to a double DIN sat nav unit (perhaps a Pioneer AVIC unit) but want to find out what the problem is first, as if it's the amp I'll need a new one of those also. I recall reading an article in a recent Porsche Post about a Cayman's amp being sent off to Germany for a fix...

I will let you know how I get on.

I would be interested to hear about ditching the factory sat nav for an aftermarket unit. My sim card holder is stuck & won't eject & rather than get it fixed or replaced.

Would there be any difficulty in upgrading & still being able to use the hands free facilities? Will the Bose system cause any problems?

Thanks

Have always been told to start at the cheapest option
Was once told I needed a new ECU for my urquattro Actually was a fuse in the wrong place !!
So get the power regulator checked up if that is not right that could cause the problem!!

I had many problems with my head unit, mostly not playing/ejecting CD's and was on the verge of replacing with a modern head unit. Finally with some help from forum found Maple Audio in Bath 01225 469790 who repaired it successfully and at the time could get all parts needed. Could be worth a try.

I got to the bottom of the issue when I realised that the fibre signal was not being sent to the other units, this was due to a small internal glass fuse being blown inside the cd changer unit, well worth checking these out as all the units have one inside on the pcb,
AT LAST !
