headgasket blown

Well after 15 years and circa 174,000 miles (70,000 or so at increased boost) my head gasket has let go (big very dense cloud of steam behind the car). Don't know whether it is down to age or hitting 30+psi a few times around 4k miles ago, anyway tomorrow I will mostly be removing stuff from the engine bay.
Once I have the head off condition will be assessed and the way forward will be decided. Unfortunately I also could do with a replacement gearbox as well as I have play in the input and output shafts - 6k exchange for a factory rebuilt unit so I think an alternative source will be required.

Sorry to hear your news Tony.

It must be the time of year for annoying failures.

With extension building and stuff I've not had much time to fettle Beaky, but after his gearbox change and sump off adventures to cure oil leak he has been back to have another oil leak done. I've had new shells and, if anything oil pressure is worse, and when I opened the bonnet yesterday I found the the expansion tank was pretty well empty.

I daren't add up all the bills, but I know I've poured between 3 and 4K into the car over the last 4 or 5 months and I'm not best pleased. What is making things worse is my dad has just bought a 3.0ltr S Type and it is a very nice car. As you do, I started looking at second hand values and had to grit my teeth. For the money that has disappeared into Beaky I could easily have had an S Type myself.

You often see old Porsches for sale advertised at less than the value of the works recently undertaken. I used to wonder how people could do that. It is becoming far clearer now.

Tony ..... Beakys old gearbox is sitting in the back garden currently if you want one to build a replacement on.

Sorry to hear this Tony, it's lasted a good while though and you've definitely had your moneys worth. The silver lining is it didn't go whilst incredibly hot on a track day []

What else will you be tempted to do, now that the head is off [;)], and don't forget you've still got that kitchen to finish

John, I don't know what you mean, my Turbo hasn't cost me anything for 6 months.

Thanks for the thoughts and Yes and I was in Swansea earlier this week, as it was it went 40 miles from home so I was lucky.

John dont know if it helps but I knew my reliability was becoming an issue, mileage is c174K and I have done over 17k miles this year. I had a hose go last year that delayed me by a few hours and meant a rescheduled meeting. I need a reliable vehichle that is fast (overtakng on Aand B roads) can carry a reasonable amount of kit and is tough and enjoyable to drive without becoming too tiring.
Looking around at alternatives (pref. RWD) there are few (someone I work with pointed out he would have trouble getting what I pulled out of my boot into the boot of his Volvo saloon).
I thought about an M3/5 but dont believe these will be any cheaper to run and BMW's dont really appeal thanks to the attitude of 318 owners.
Scoobies bore me, mitsu Evo's have short service intervals and look naff. Skylines offer lots of performance but also are likely to cost serious money to keep honest as they age.
NSX yes please but the space is not there. TVR I would love a Tamora or a T350 or a Cerbera but could I rely on it? and would it bankrupt me?
350Z I like the look and sound of but I do sometimes use my rear seats, and even for an import it would be 15K.
A Supra is probably the closest to a more modern 944 but the dash is very plasticky and it was criticised when new for having inert handling. Also in the pics I have seen the boot looks smaller and awkwardly shaped. It was made up to 98 (in Japan) so there are some newer ones around and they are strong - I understand the engine internals are good for around 800BHP. My Brothers corrolla GT (rwd, LSD, multi link live axle, 16v 1.6 screamer) always impressed me in the details, tickover at 2,500 till the engines warm, starts and runs right even if left parked for 6months, no oil leaks at 20 years old etc.
However toyotas seem to lack soul maybe its too efficient.

So I reckon if I spend some cash on the Porsche (ÂŁ10K) for a refreshed engine, gearbox, brakes and bodywork, it will be good for at least another 100k miles and should still be worth something in the end. For the same performance other than the Supra I think I would need to spend at least 20K which would depreciate to almost nothing over the next 4 years.

Tony

and finally Jag S-type probably depreciates 3-4k a year and they still need work ;)

Oh and thanks very much for the offer of the gearbox (is it an LSD one?), I may take you up on it (swap it for my worn out one if you like) unless it looks like the car is going to be off the road for sometime for engine works.

It is an LSD but doesn't have the oil cooler. I'm hoping not to get involved in swapping gear boxes again for a bit so if you want to hold onto it for the moment I don't have a problem with that.

As the garden is a bit of a builders yard currently, it isn't a critical feature to the overall ambiance. Assuming the building gets finished eventually, Belinda would like her garden back one day so finding somewhere to lodge a gearbox would be a good thing.

I still have a spare 306 GTI-6 engine in the garage if anyone wants to make some sort of garden feature out of car bits.

Tony,
This could be a great oportunity to upgrade to a 6 speed 968 box? I know you also need the torque tube & I think the fuel tank too, but the split tube makes clutch changes etc much easier.

I thought they had pinion bearing issues with the standard 240BHP? I would think an extra 100BHP would mean a short life span.

Well the head is off and it doesn't look to bad to me - I will get a second opinion though. Looks like a 3.2 monster will have to wait till I break it properly [;)]

Thanks, Tony. No rush at the moment with the xmas posting frenzy.

I can hardly believe it really exists [:D]

I'd wait on the 3.2 if I were you - they'll all be talking about something else soon !

Cheers

Rick.

Those phone camera pics are pretty good quality (for a phone).

Interesting that you think you may have had a widefire head gasket already. Any chance of a close up of the failed gasket ring. I bet your heart sunk a little when you spotted the light score []

You're catching up with Gareth now, it may have taken him only a few hours to get the head off but IIRC it took him weeks to get it all back together again [:D]
