Headgasket change

Hello Guys

Well had the inlet manifold off this week and made the decision while I was there to change the headgasket - 20 years old and now running 18psi boost - time bomb!

Question to the knowledgeable - is the OEM gasket a Victor Reinz? Hope so as just bought a head set.

Any car our age is going to wear out it's original HG within the next few years and once you up the boost a little it will hurry it along quite nicely.

Much better to change it beforehand and not worry for another 10 years at least.

This is a dilemma i've been struggling with since I bought my car. I've spoken to countless people about this and I'm surprised that just about all say that HG's are items you replace when they eventually fail rather than pro-actively replace. I suppose they are right as ultimately there is no wear as such on an HG and there is no reason why increasing boost pressure should cause the HG to fail provided you have good tuning. Afterall it is excess heat that breaks HG's rather than boost. Having said all that I don't feel comfortable knowing my HG is 21yrs and 120k miles old so i've decided to leave things half to chance as i'll replace mine at the next timing belt interval which is in about 12 months time.
