Headlamp alignment

Hello, All

Just back from France, I have swapped my LDH headlamps for my RHD ones.

I am wondering how I can check that the alignment is still correct so that the car will not fail the MOT. Is this possible without the equipment that the MOT tester uses?

Take a car that you know is OK for MOT purposes. Park it a few metres from a garage door on level ground, and mark with a bit of tape where the dipped beam cut off points are on the garage door. Mark on the ground where the front of the car is.

Now repeat the process with the Porsche, and see if the dipped beam points are roughly similar. If they are leave it alone. If they are miles out, adjust them to the same point.

OK so it's not high precision, but I'd be be prepared to bet it would get through an MOT. In any event, it is preferable to driving about with lights set too high and blinding other drivers.

Doh!

I should have done that with my car before I swapped the headlamps!

BTW, my set of LHD lamps cost well under £100 second hand, and the exchange takes about 10 - 15 minutes. If you are careful, you will not loose the alignment because you do not have to touch the alignment screws to effect the change. On this occasion, I took one of the lamps apart to clean its reflector and get rid of grot that had built up over the years, and this lost the alignment.

I think that changing lamps is extremely worthwhile even for a short time in a right-driving country, because you can do not have to choose between seeing at night and dazzling others. Changing to LHD lenses costs less but takes far longer, and you have to re-align each time.
