Headlamp Mounting Question

As some of you may be aware, I recenetly purchased a headlamp upgrade kit from IceShark, in the States.

The loom is a fabulous piece of work and, though I haven't tried it in anger yet, does seem to might the headlamps much brighter even with their original bulbs. [:D]

Included with the kit are a pair of replacement lamps, and these have raised some interesting issues. These lamps don't fit on my car as they are of a conventional round bowl design where as my current lamps have mounting brakets on the rear flange of the bowl. (see attached picture).

I have subsequently interogated PET to find that there are four options of headlamp provision on the 944 - well there would be wouldn't there![] The illustrations are far from helpful but, the earlier illustration shows a conventional unbracketed bowl with a twin mounting ring set up, the later a single mounting ring as per my picture.

Mr Shark is doing a sterling job to sort out these issues but I was interested to find out if anyone on the forum has a multi ring mounting, or if we all have single rings - obviously reference to the car build year would make this a more informative discussion.

I look forward to your comments.

I should know this as one of mine came loose a few years ago [&:] I'll have a look at the weekend (too dark when I get home [:D] )

Another question or rather two questions:-

1. Do your headlamps come up at switch position 1?

2. If they do come up, is the headlamp off when the ignition is off but on at a reduced light level when the ignition is on?

John
Mine is a 1998 Model and
1. Yes, lamps come up on position 1
2. Yes, lamps are up and off when ignition is off, reduced light when ignition on.

1. I believe 87,88 and possibly 89 light pods come up at position 1 earlier and later they do not. Something to do with dim dip laws.

2. Pass

Haven't you heard of the mod to keep them down?

My 944's (an '86, 2 '89's a '90 and a '92) have all had non pop-up sidelights, soy you might be right about '87 and '88 only, Tony.

Thanks for you comments guys (and anyone who might post subsequently) this has confirmed my theory as to how Beakys lights were behaving.

Haven't you heard of the mod to keep them down?

I keep saying that I'm going to do it but never got around to it. It looks like I'm going to have to now as my nice new monster, snow melting lamp relays don't much like the dim dip system. [] Can anyone point me in the direction of the instructions?

Do I recall, in one of the forums, that someone recently carried out the lights down mod and it caused problems?

Did they come with RH or LH dip Prisms??

Cheers
Tom

They come with RH dip, but I'm going to put them in upside down.....Only kidding! They are UK spec LH beam pattern and would be super if I could mount them.

Shunt!

Can any body point me in the direction of the "Keep Your Headlamps Down on switch position 1." mod instructions please?

Thanks Fen,

I've run off a copy now so shouldn't loose it this time.

I think I will get an extra relay/link and rewire it internaly rather than have the wires sticking out of the socket though.

Now do I risk doing it on Saturday or leave well alone for the moment?[8|]

"If it isn't broken, modify it until it is"

Ah temptation, get thee behind me Satan. [;)]

I will phone my OPC tomorow and order a link, then when it arrives I will remove my original link and attack that - but only when the replacement link arrives....

....probably.

Looks like John will be driving home before it gets dark on Sunday then

I thought that once you got North of Birmingham it was dark all the time at this time of the year.

I've not had a chance to order the part so I'll be leaving things as they are for the moment. How very adult of me.

I vaguely remember someone doing the mod and having an issue after, others have done the mod and had no problems,
Tony

There was mention of a problem at the end of the thread that Fen pulled up for me (as noted above), something along the lines of the headlamps stayed down on position one (good) went up on position two (also good) but then never went down again (not so good).

I tend to be a little nieve with electrics and assume (if there aren't any IC's or PCB's involved) if things go pear shaped you should get away with a blown fuse, or relay, which can be replaced to get back to the begining if necessary.

Probably "famous last words" which is why I'm not touching it tomorrow. And if Paull or Fen says "go on, you know you want to do it" I'm going to put my fingers in my ears and go la la la. [:D]

Ah didn't read it to the end, get those who turn up at promax to do it for you.
Those big rechargeable torches are getting cheaper so a couple of those and a bit of gaffer tape should sort you out [:D] :ROFLMAO:
Tony
