944 man

I have a series one 944, with early type lamps, which do not incorporate a separate sidelight (similar to a MK1 Golf). When the dipped headlamps are turned on; and when main beam is selected the offside lamp only manages a dimmed dip. Ive removed the lamps and checked the bulbs, identifying that the 'car' is at fault, as opposed to the bulbs themselves. When either headlamp filamment is selected (main/dip) the offside bulb only achieves a dimmed dip, in both elements. The near side bulb with operate correctly and one dim filament illuminates.
I would appreciate any helpful suggestions that will move me forward and Id be grateful if anyone could tell me which plug postion on an H4 bulb did what. Unconventionally, the cars sidelights are located in 951-type combined lights mounted in the PU, although the wiring is original as much as can be. The sidelights have stopped working too: this may have happened at the same time, or it may be a double-b*stard coincidence... [
