I have a my2003 Boxster 2.7.I would like to upgrade the lights.I have seen super whites 55w H7 advertised which produce100w and are suitable for plastic lenses{they also protect the wiring I believe ] I found a firm on e bay selling bulbs cheaply{zeldautos]but cannot get a reply from them.Any advice anyoneon the most powerful legal bulbs to use as I have an mot due in a month?Any advice on best prices would be appreciated too.
Tony

100W bulbs are not legal - off road use only.

I bought some Osram Silverstar ("50% Brighter") H7's from Autobulbs Direct
Legal and much brighter than standard.
They were delivered next day.
Great service.

If the ones you refer to are PIAA then they are fine - they are 55W and only draw the same current, but because the gas mixture within the bulb cap is superior to std bulbs they give the impression of extra wattage.

I've used PIAA in the past and found them much better - Osram silverstars are mnuch cheaper nad get good comment from users

forget higher wattage bulbs, not only do they burn much hotter they also overtax the wiring loom, watts equal amps times volts, you have a 12 volt system therefore every 100 watts loads the cables with 8 amps.
Ordinary bulbs will still give a yellow light and the difference between 55 watts and 100 is negligable, you can also ignore all the hype about Zenon gas filled bulbs as it makes no difference as the light output is generated in the same way as a standard bulb (The element glows)

Best go for a HID conversion set, H7 is the type for the Boxster and each bulb draws only 35 watts but produce 2.5 times the light with a much lower temperature, colours at night are more realistic.
They are dead easy to fit and you need only very basic skills to do, most packages come with instructions and providing you can read you can do the job, they are also fully legal and will not affect the MOT.
The bulbs also last 5 times as long (usually the life of the car)
In HID (also known as Zenon) it is the gas that burns, not an element

Look on E-bay, prices around ÂŁ150 to ÂŁ200

I changed mine 3 months ago, passed the MOT in September and look great, driving at night is much better and the road more clearly defined.

One last thing, i do not have anything to do with selling HID, i really am a very happy and satisfied customer

passed the MOT in September

Unless you have self-leveling headlights and headlamp wash system your car should have failed its MOT.

In saying that, it only takes minutes to replace the origonal blub for the MOT if need be.

Not true; self levelling and washers are only required if factory-fitted. Aftermarket fitments are exempt - and a good MOT Test Centre will know that.

I stand corrected.

Please can you advise the source of that information.
I have, so far, believed the Road Traffic Act required self-levelling and headlight washers.
Cheers,
Peter

I understood they were verboten as well - which is why Porsche offer the litronic upgrade in other countries, but not in the UK (The self leveling can't be retrofitted)

Cant offer too much of a solution but it can sometimes be to do with the hardness of the suspension. Too much harsh shaking can cause headlamps to blow.

Use geniune bulbs.

Whenever I have used own brand bulbs (especially from a well known high street retailer) they always seem to blow sooner .

030 17" wheels 99k miles and I've only had 1 lamp blow. Considering most of those miles have been run in Gloucestershire I don't think suspension has anything to do with it.
