headlight covers clouding

The headlight covers on my car have started to cloud around the edges I believe this is a fairly common issue as a number of cars I looked at when I was purchasing my car had this issue. One dealer told me he would get them polished out. The question is should you polish them and if you can what would you use to do it?

I'm a new member so go easy on me! I subscribe to this channel on YouTube - gives very helpful advice on car detailing but this video deals specifically with headlamp lens fogging, why it happens, how to deal with it and what the long term effects are. According to this guy it's UV rays that cause the damage and a straight out polish may not cure the problem long term. Other owners may have other advice. Here's the link:

Hope it helps.

If the clouding is mild just a standard mild cutting paste followed by a polish.

If it's bad then 1500 sandpaper followed by cutting paste and a polish preferably using a machine.

There are kits on ebay for c £20.

As above. Easier with a polishing machine. As a note Meguiars sell a headlamp restoration kit, sure others are available.

Meguiars kit works well but expensive. Others have tried using 2500 wet and dry then 3m cutting polish with success.

I've just done my headlamps over the Christmas break , I used the autoglym kit and was impressed on how they turned out.

Polishing (with sanding first for bad cases) gets the lights shining again but removes the UV protective layer so they will dull more quickly. The are various options for protecting your shiny new lenses, most kits have a proprietary finish, two part clear lacquer or even polish are DIY options.
