Headlight gap to bumper

I don’t know if it’s the same for the 718 but it’s not necessarily to remove the front bumper to remove the headlights on my 987.2 CS.

Have a look in your Driver’s Manual under Headlights. There may be section: Removing Headlights.

So unfortunately it all changed in the 718. They are now bolted in and you no longer get the little tool to release the headlight in the toolkit. The OPC confirmed it‘s a bumper off job now to replace a headlight. There are a few YouTube videos covering it, but it’s not something I’d want to try myself.

Hi,

I have a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 with the LED headlights and I noticed that on the drivers side I have a much larger gap (7mm) between the bottom of the headlight and the top of the bumper, than on the passenger side (3mm). I had a look at other 718 Caymans (base models with non-led) in my dealership and they seemed to have a much smaller gap and be the same on both sides. Their GTS 4.0 demo is almost as bad as mine. Is this a GTS 4.0/LED thing?

Could anyone with a GTS 4.0 Cayman/Boxster and LED lights, check theirs to see if it's similar? I know to take these headlights out the bumper has to come off and I'd really prefer not to have that done if possible. Headlight beam seems level.

Yep, about 6 mm on driver's side and 3 mm on passenger side on my 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 with LED.

Thanks very much for checking ordev, it's much appreciated.

I guess that's the way some of them are. It's odd, as my previous 718 (2.0 with Bi Xenon PDLS) was perfect.

It's one of those things...once you've noticed it, you can't un-see it [:D]

I'll be cursing you every time I look at the car now. Just kidding! :p

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've checked against mine (2022 with LED's), the gap seems reasonably symmetrical i.e the same both sides.

Ken

This seems a bit like the rear spoiler on the 981 Cayman, that rarely fits as we would think it should. I wonder what locates the bumper underneath the headlight. This would appear to be the variable factor as the bumper itself is pretty flexible and the headlight fits well against the wing. Perhaps this locating tab / pin, if it exists, can be adjusted a little bit?

So the top of the drivers side headlight also sits a little lower against the wing than the better fitting passenger side. This was the same on the OPC demo car. It’s as if the whole light unit is at a slightly different angle and therefore causing the bigger gap at the bottom. The levels of both in terms of light beam is thankfully the same. I guess this is the self-levelling working.

It’s going to come down to whether it’s worth asking the OPC to take the bumper off on a new car, and the associated risk of scratches etc, or just leave it and maybe get it looked at during the first service . I’ve seen four now with the same thing. Sometimes it’s better not to look too closely 😉

Your description and a closer look at the photo indicates that there is a greater gap, both top and bottom, on the driver's side. I wonder whther the headlamp on that side might be set a little further back into the aperture, thus presenting a slightly smaller cross section at the rim.

(Happy to drop the subject if it is becoming too nerdy, just intriguing.)

You have now started me looking and I have seen many different makes where the headlamp fitting gap varies side to side. I think I will go and lie down in a darkened room.
