For those of you with older 986 Boxsters you may have like me "yellowing" heavily oxidised headlights. Since getting my car 52 plate last year I couldn't help be drawn to the very yellowish look and weakened beam the lights offered (even being litronic/xenon). The car I think has sat most of it's life outside and not in a garage judging from how badly faded the badges were when I bought it last year.
So this weekend I finally decided to try out a "One Step headlight restoration kit" from a well known company, think the Tom Cruise film "Jerry Meg...." - (avoiding naming!) for around £21.
The process is quite simple:
1) Mask around headlight area
2) Attach provided wool pad to your drill and apply supplied cleaner/polish
3) Apply slowly across headlights and work evenly around light
4) remove excess cleaner/polish with a clean microfibre
It says one step but the kit now contains type 1/2/3/4 sandpaper to manually sand the lights and to get to more awkward areas.
I Soaked the sandpaper in water for a minute, sprayed the light with water then set about sanding the light in turn by hand with each grade (starting with 1 in a side-to-side motion, soaking the light every now and again, removing excess off once done (I spent around 5 or so minutes on each phase) but may be longer or shorter dependant on how bad they are.
For grade 2 sandpaper, I worked in an up-down motion, 3 side to side and 4 up and down.
Once done I repeated steps 1-4 as above wiping the lights afterwards.
The result? - well even I was very surprised how well it worked. The headlights look really fresh again, especially the surrounds and the lights are much brighter. Amazing what a difference is made.
I didn't get pictures of the process but I'll take a couple and will post up to show you the result.
Anyway, thought I'd share this as it was a painless job and relatively cheap way of restoring your lights.
Thanks for reading!
