Headlight switch

I've been having a problem with the headlight rocker switch.

No problems with the sidelights on the first setting but when switching to the second main beam setting the headlights pop up but often the headlights do not switch on. However if I manipulate the switch the lights do come on.

Unfortunately they have in recent days decided to switch off without warning leaving me in the dark at speed whilst I jiggle the switch to get them back on! Not good.

How do you remove the switch for replacement/examination? I've noticed the panel in which the switch and the rotary dash brightness adjustment control are in, do I take that panel out?

Yes, you remove the panel: its all a one piece switch behind though. Switch failure is quite common in early cars. The problem is caused by the rheostat, which when turned 'down' gets too hot and leads to the failure of the whole switch.

Tell me about it. I had one fail quite catastrophicly and fill the cabin with smoke. Luckily I was yards from home and mananged to just force the switch off. Internally the switch had melted and when it all cooled down I could not move the rocker. I did post a wiring mod on the forum ages ago to bypass the contacts in the switch with a relay.

Had the same problem last Jan, i was not so lucky and had a full dash fire. I so glad i always carry a fire ex with me. I think i would have lost the car if i did not.. Don't mess with it change it ASAP.

Happy days. I spent about six months slotting the switch on and off the multi plug to make the lights turn on and off. It never seemed as important as the contstant battle to keep the rain out.

Paul - is NYL 604Y known to the club? Somehow I doubt it given the state it was in when I sold it. The phone still rang off the hook though...
