Headlight switch

Hi guys,

I'm having problems getting my headlight switch to stay in the main beam position. The twisting action moves it between parking lights/main beams, but it's an awful hassle getting main beams to stick. Does anyone know how easy it is to repair the switches (diy job?) or should I just buy a new one?

Hi Gary,

Im sure on my car you have to pull the switch towards you to change between side lights and main lights, twisting the knob dims/brightens the gauge illumination.

 
Gary are you talking about switching between main and dip beam via the stalk on the steering wheel or headlights and sidelights via the push-pull/rotary switch at the right of the dash?
 
I'm talking about the push-pull/rotary switch.... I pull it out and it used to just turn on the main lights, then I figured out that slowly pulling it out would bring me to a place where it indeed engaged the sidelights... the switch was always like this.... now when I pull it out only the side lights turn on, unless I turn the knob far right and giggle it a good bit to get the main lights to stay on (thus raising the level on the gauge lights too). In a word - knackered.
 
I think you've answered your own question Gary , remove the switch (writing down the connections as you disconnect) and see if a clean and a sparay wit hcontact cleaner will help, failing that buy another from a breakers, there are plenty available.
 
Ok, so I got a replacement Headlight switch from Douglas Valley.
Fine and dandy except that I'm having a huge pain in the neck trying to remove the old one. The button itself seems to be stuck to the stalk. After inserting an allen key in the small guide hole in the stalk I turned anti clockwise but the button wouldn't unscrew. The rubber button part itself has now come off and left me with it's metal housing, which appears to be stuck to the stalk. Any suggestions on how I can remove this?
I also note that there's a plastic screw-in part to afix the switch to the dashboard with 4 small holes on it. How does one remove this part to unhouse the switch itself?

It's been a while since I changed one of these, but from memory I think that when it comes to removing the button you just pull it right out as firmly as you can (or dare) and then keep turning anticlockwise until it fully unscrews. To fully remove the switch you need to remove the circular trim piece which you have already identified (with the four holes in it). This unscrews, either with a special tool, or with care a narrow nail can be inserted into just one of the holes and then coax it round anticlockwise. There's a lot of thread on it but it's only plastic so there should be little resistance. Even if you damage this part it's very cheap to replace.

Once that bit has been unscrewed the switch will pop out from the reverse of the dash.
