Headlight upgrade

After collecting my new 944 S2 last, I had to drive through some narrow Cornwall country roads in the dark and wet to get to the hotel. The lights may have been good when it was built, but they aren't up to much. www.porscheshop.co.uk sell a Xenon HID kit for £185. Does anyone have any experience of this or recommend anything else.

There's a chap on PH who sells HID upgrade kits, who always seems pretty good. I think he has a 993 as well, so knows a bit about Pork. Details here: http://pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=0&memberId=31982&t=478668 Oli.

Try Alan at Aceparts - used his kit on my 993 last year - first class. www.aceparts.com/ My recollection ( hazy at best ) is that it was somewhat less expensive than your fig. and that he gives a discount to PCOGB members. A.

I haven't bought an HID kit from Alan (yet) but have bought other things from him and the service and advise from Aceparts have been excellent. Didn't Xenon install HIDs to his 944? Maybe he has some advice.

I simply bought some upgraded 'brighter' Osram H4 bulbs for mine and whilst not exactly turning night into day, they are certainly good enough imho and much better than before. That said, I think we are all perhaps a little too used to blinding Xenon headlights fitted to modern cars, which are often simply too bright, especially for oncoming traffic![8|]

I agree with Nick, replacement Osram bulbs or ones similar for £15 - £20 worked wonders for my previous Turbo. Might be worth a try before investing in the whole HID thing.

First thing I did was the Osram bulb conversion on the 993 - did make a difference but isn't in same league as HID. Obviously reflector shape etc. influences performance so they may make a significantly greater difference in the 944. A.

...nor is the price![:D] Xenon will be along soon to post his experiences - an advocate of the Aceparts kit on his S2. I would expect an improvement over the bulb upgrade, but have not seen it in practice.

Where do you pick up the live for these kits? Or is it a plug and play as I think the kit "Xenon" fitted he took a live from the bottom of the fuse box? Or are they a simple follow the instructions fit?

I fitted a generic H4 HID kit to my S2, very easy and a worthwhile upgrade. @ Lemon - the feed from the fusebox was to power the ballasts which in turn were switched by relays powered by the original headlamp loom and thus no modification to the factory fit loom was needed. Very easy to fit.
