Headlight 'upgrade'

Anyone replaced the standard headlights with something (assume Xenon) which works a bit better?

Am going to be moving, and therefore commuting a lot more in my 993, and would like to be able to see at night....

And any recommendations of fitters (I live in SE - Paragon is closest specialist) welcome.

Thanks

Buy a set of H1 xenons off Ebay and then fit them yourself. It is a simple plug and play proceedure which will take no more than an hour.

Sorry to sound negative, but save your money and don't change the bulbs. Sure, there are some bulbs out there that will give a slight improvement, but in my honest opinion that improvement is not all that worthwhile. Also, beware!!!! You can very easily buy bulbs that have a current demand which far outstrips the wiring capability on the car. At best, you could end up with a re-wire, at worst you could end up with an insurance payout and be looking for a new car; (yes, it really can happen!).

I went the Xenon upgrade route, bought off Ebay. There was a little filing of the bulb aperture required, but nothing outside the scope of someone with a bit of savvy. At the same time I stripped the lights down and cleaned all the lenses; (see Maurice's excellent technical article and check you've got the new technical service bulletin bulb clips!). You really will not regret the results of your efforts.

Regards

I nitially tried the bulb upgrade before gettind the xenons. It was a waste of money, very slight improvement, but that would not be hard!

Have been running with this mod for over a year now and would highly recommend it purely on safety grounds.

Totally agree with Will & Oliver !

I tried it all >>> cleaing the inside of the lenses>>>> then tried new Osram bulbs>>>> then tried new headlamp glass === all improvements BUT still nothing compared to real HID Xenon power !

how I don't miss the days of driving with the fogs lights on and thinking 'are my headlamps actually on ?!' [:D]

There is another route, which is to buy original porsche xenons and fit them... more expensive, but there are truly fantastic... and as it is OEM, there is no drilling etc. And you can keep the "old" headlights, so you can swap them around if you sell your 993.

Which ever route you decide to go, I totally agree with previous posts, that the difference the xenon lights make, is staggering. A good upgrade, if expensive.

Good luck.

There is no drilling required with the HID kits, and if you want to keep them when you sell it is just a ase of removing the bulb as all the wiring is connected. You are looking at a 5 minute job to remove them and put in the old bulb.

Sorry, I appear to have misled you - just read your post and have looked at how I phrased my post regarding Maurice's technical article. The article is actually about the retaining clips and doesn't refer to cleaning. It can be found here:

Interesting post by 968er. It would appear then that there are subtle differences in the diameter of the bulbs some of the kits contain. I had to let out the alloy holder the bulb goes through by about 1mm, as my Xenon's were just too large to fit. Ninemeister refer to this process on their website, so I'm presuming my kit is similar to the ones they supply.

Something to be aware of come bulb replacement time, then!

Thanks for that Maurice - I knew I'd seen an article on cleaning somewhere. Must be all the Brands Hatch sun Frazzling the brain!!!!
