Headlight Wash

I have a 2002 Targa with headlight wash. Every time I try to use the wash, whilst the washer covers move and a pump sounds, no water comes out.
According to the handbook, the headlight washers share the same water tank as the main windscreen washers - so I haven't been looking for a separate tank to fill. Is there a second tank, or do I have some sort of blockage somewhere?

Make sure your headlights are switched on. I thought my washers were broken until i was told! Duh!

Hi Andrew. I had a similar problem. I don't suppose that you use Porsches screen wash additive by any chance? I used to (as my OPC gave me a free bottle ages ago) and it turns out that the stuff congeals in the bottom of the water tank and then wrecks the water pump when you try to use the headlight washers. The mechanic at the OPC threw my bottle in the bin and told me to get hold of anything but Porsches own washer additive. The car was still under warranty so I got a new wash pump and flush, etc. - FOC.

If you're on your own with this (I assume that you are) - don't despair, try the following: Either try to remove the washer tank (there'll be a link on this forum somewhere) and give it good wash out
OR
Put some soda crystals in the washer tank (the solution won't harm your paint work) and allow it to dissolve any gunk that's accumulated at the bottom of your tank - I would leave it stand in the tank at least over night and don't be afraid to use a strong solution of soda crystal to H2O. You can always use warm or even hot water which will make the solution easier to mix. Mix the water with the soda crystals before you add it to the water tank. If there's already a load of water in the water tank try to siphon as much of it out as you can before you add your soda crystal solution. Once you get a positive result (ie the washers start to function again) the key is then to dilute the gunk as much as possible by filling the tank full of water before you try to blow it through using the water pump. This should avoid you having to remove the water tank - which might be a bit of a pig if I remember rightly.

Hope this helps. let us know how you get on.

Adrian.

Hi Andrew. Best of luck. I should have also mentioned that my situation almost certainly occurred due to to lack of use. The same water had probably been in the washer tank for years as the car has never been driven in the rain and - as such - I've only ever used the washers a handful of times.

Silly and foolish, I know. But that's just the way I roll, dude. Know what I mean?! [:D]

I have used the OPC stuff and its fine as long as its mixed with distilled water. Tap water sends it all funny.

I can't make up my mind whether Buxton or Harrogate Spa is best. I tried Evian and Perrier, but it wasn't worth the extra money. [:D]

Isn't there a Porsche part number for water Richard [;)]

It certainly will make a difference in the area that you live. Birmingham water is particularly soft! I use distilled from my new condensing tumble dryer!
