Headlight washer query

Hello,

I've had a problem with my headlight washers since I bought the car (1985 Turbo) and am determined to get it fixed.

I've taken off my front bumper today to reveal the headlight washer system. It was a fairly easy job too which is always a bonus and I can see the pump and pipework.

I have tested for voltage at the plug which fits onto the pump itself and I have 12v when the lights are on and the rocker switch is pressed.

The 12v however is only present for a split second. I am right in thinking that this is "normal" to allow the pump to swirt a single jet of water at each light?

If I hold the rocker switch down the voltage does not return until I release the switch and try again.

The bumper is staying off until this is fixed so if someone can reply it will mean I can solve the problem with the washers and get back in the car and drive it!

Cheers,
Chris

Hi,

I'm pretty certain the pump on mine runs while the switch is held down, I can check tomorrow. It could be a 'weak' relay that's on it's way out, only able maintain the circuit for that split second before breaking it. I guess that can be checked by bridging the circuit.

Stu,

Thanks for your reply. If you can check your headlight washer jets and see what happens when you hold the switch down and post back I'll have something postitive to go on.

I did bridge the relay connector to provide 12v to the pump and I got a spark. Then I thought I might as well have a good look at the pump and setup so took the bumper off (all good learning experience!). I'll have another look today at the wiring and direct 12v to the pump again. I might take the relay apart too and see whats what there.

The last time I had an issue with something like this was when my brake lights didnt want to come on. I had voltage going down the wiring to them when bulbs not in but when under load the voltage would disappear. That turned out to be the fuse in the fuse holder not sustaining the current under load (pitted fuse and quite loose fit in holder). Whether this is similar I will find out.

Cheers

Chris,

Looks like I was wrong, the pump on mine runs for about 0.5 - 1.0 second when the button is pressed. It seems your washer is working correctly.

My Carrera's run for a couple of seconds.

When you say split second, it sounds as if the timer relay is cutting the power before the pump gets chance to pump any water.

Thanks for your reply's!

When I say split second I think its the similar time as you guys are seeing. I see voltage on my meter display long enough to read etc and then it goes so I'm sure thats as it should be.

I have checked the relay by taking it apart and that all appears fine. I have also had voltage directly fed to the pump terminals by strapping out a couple of contacts on the relay connection socket. The volatge I can 100% say is getting to the pump itself, its just not activating the thing.

I will buy another pump, fit it and I'm sure have a working system :)

I have another related question now! The pump has a rubber shroud which covers the body and its terminals. Mine didnt want to come off too easy and whilst getting to the terminals ripped apart a little. Can these still be purchased?? I've looked on Pelican and I dont think it can. I guess I could just wrap it all up in self-amalgamating tape and that'll do it.

Thanks.

Try design 911 I got the rubber fittings 3 that the pump fits onto then into the bulkhead of the car. Not cheap £13.00 ouch !!!!!!!!!!!!!

SEE YA,

Are you not thinking of the windscreen washer pump mounting?
That is fitted to the front bulkhead via 3 small rubber grommet style mountings.

The headlamp washer pump fits onto the side of the washer bottle under the front wing and has a rubber shroud which fits over the top. I dont know how it actually stays in there yet (think there is a rubber mounting) as I havent ripped mine out yet. I will only do this when the new pump arrives.

View the Pelican parts diagram and look at item "2d", this part appears to be NLA (no longer available).
