Headlight Washers, Sunroof removal (electrics) and Voltmeter problems

hi all,

I'm planning to tackle these electrical problems, grateful for any thoughts/ideas/tips please?

1. Headlight washers not working (not the fuse).
2. Sunroof - with key in position 1 supposedly I should press the rocker downwards to release the sunroof, thus allowing complete removal..... Nothing happens though! Note, the sunroof goes up and down correctly, and seals, so this is to do with when I want to remove it.
3. Voltmeter - when cranking it jumps around, but with engine running it just sits smack on full (16V).

many thanks in advance,

Mike

I don't know if the following applies to an S2, but they worked on by '84 square dash ...

1) The headlight washers have a separate motor on the washer reservoir. In my case, the pump had been removed and left just sitting there, with the hole filled with some sort of cement. On removal of the reservoir the reason for the bodge would seem to have been that the sealing washer had fallen into the reservoir ! Cleaning it all up and putting it all back together and hey presto, it all worked. In your case, can you hear the pump working ? If so, check that your car hasn't been subjected to any similar bodge. If you cannot hear the pump, then I would check the wiring to it.

2) On my car there is a pair of clips at the front that have to be released. Lowering the roof to its full extent withdraws the lifting arms from the roof and it then just lifts out.

3) Dunno, but 16V sounds a bit much ! I have come across this sort of thing if the wiring to the motor isn't 100% sound.

HTH !

Thanks gothatway,

update so far:

headlamp washers - it's definitely the pump itself (which I'm pleasked about rather than it being the wiring) so I'll order one..... Can anyone advise the part no or have a good spare for sale? (Waylander always seems to come up trumps).

sunroof - not looked yet, I've not actually undone the front clips, merely from reading the manual it says to put ignition switch into position 1, operate the rocker switch to lower it (even though it's closed), which I think should release something at the rear, then once the clips at the front are undone it then lifts? Whilst at Le Mans in June I discovered something wasn't right, backed up by Colin944 who showed me what I should be doing.......

voltmeter - I haven't got to check this yet but I think it's the gauge rather than actually charging at 16v. I'll test exactly tomorrow if the rain keeps away for long enough.

Washers; I have a feeling that the pumps are quite pricey but try the usual sources.
Sunroof; Sounds like a switch problem (sunroof problems usually boil down to switch problems.) Read this through from start to finish and then go exploring: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/body-03.htm.
Voltmeter; Measure voltage at terminals and work on from there. It's not hard.

Hi

the headlamp pump 191955681 is a VW part number used on all sorts 1990 VW's

try your local VW dealer, found a few for about £40

ebay item 281743934645

Thanks Waylander, quick question though... my pump is white, does that matter? (To make clear, both pumps, windscreen and headlights, are white).

update regarding voltmeter, I've checked and I'm charging at 13.68 volts, so it's meter related (or could it be anything to do with the push fit resistor behind the cluster). Any ideas gratefully welcomed?

many thanks,

Mike

Yep, that's it (slightly different on the square dash as I only have to put the key in the ignition, not turn it to position 1). Having lowered the roof fully with the rocker switch, it will disconnect the lifting arms. Undo the clips at the front and it should just lift out.

I have the same issue with my sunroof - used to work, now does everything except unlatch for removal. Once you get the mechanism to unlatch, the roof can be lifted at the rear and then pulled backwards. The roof panel's forward edge slips over a hinge, which when the panel is removed becomes the wind deflector.

Many thanks Waylander, you certainly have an aptitude for sussing out part numbers ??
i think I'm being stupid with this though (easily done!). I took out the windscreen washer pump when I was fault finding and tinkering, and although I've not actually removed the headlamp washer pump yet I think it looks the same. Do you agree? If it is it seems a lot cheaper to buy that pump, so I'm probably wrong!

I've just clicked on the Porsche hyperlink for the part number and I think it seems to have a wide bodied section, and of course the two open male blade terminals, but some of the others are showing a straight body and terminals within a housing! This leads me to be confused!

Mike

Just removed the offending pump, and it has vw on it with part number 357955681. Ordered that for £13 from eBay (used) so I'll take a punt with that hoping it's good.

does anyone have any ideas about why the voltmeter reads 16v albeit charging at 13.68v?
