Headlights in Driving lights?

Evening all, not sure if this has been discussed on here before, but has anyone considered using the driving lights as headlights? It's a topic on rennlist currently and I know a few guys have done it over there. Just wondered if anybody knew of anything in the MOT which would render it illegal? Have had a quick look at the requirements and there is a section on headlight 'direction' - bit difficult to understand though? Any thoughts? Cheers, Ben.

I can't quote you chapter and verse but I'm pretty sure there is something legal which says that lights below 24" from the ground can only be used in low visibility (i.e. fog) or snow. You would also need some mechanism to provide a full beam if you actually wanted to see where you were going on a dark night and then be able to dip them.

Regards

Dave

Yeah, Dave is right, you wont get away with it in this country, at that height at the front they are fog lights and nothing else, so plod will pull you for it all the time, you'll find that the lense's are wrong too, they don't give the distance in the beam needed but give more of a spread left to right to cut under the fog, I know cos' I use to do it when I was younger in my hot hatches and got pulled on numerous occasions [] and now I'm the plod that pulls them over.......[:)]

Hey Guys,

Sorry to bump this thread, but a quick question for you...

I have my lights in the front bumper wired up to come on during highbeam (or lowbeam, its a switchable option) and i also have fogs too. What's the opinion on this? Legal/Not legal?

(...im not car techie minded, remember!)

You have fog lights in the bumper along with supplementary driving lights. That being the case, the driving lights come on in conjunction with main beam and at no other times, and the fog lights come on when you switch them on from the foglight switch on the right of the steering wheel. Obviously you only switch those on when foggy.

Any other permuatation is not right.

Hey Ian,

Cheers for the response.

...not right, or not legal? [8D]

(as i can get the top bumper lights, driving lights i think you said, to show on dip beam instead)

EDIT, ok after reading your post twice, you already answered my question, thanks! [:)]

The bumper mounted lamps should only illuminate with high beam and they can be disabled. They should not come on with dipped beam headlamps. The lights in the PU are fog lamps and they can be turned on whenever sidelights (or greater) are turned on. Only an idiot drives around with their fog lights on when it isnt foggy....

Begs the question why i have the option too (this feature was installed when i bought the car). Im assuming if the beam is correct, it wont be dazzling to other road users even if they are on?

...thats true, although you would be surprised just how many people do!

The original lamps dont dip; theyre spot lights only, so if theyre in a fit condition then theyll be dazzling oncoming drivers, yes.

didnt the early cars have a switch so that he driving lights would come on with main beam or not dependant on switch position?
