Headlights

Hi All,
I need to replace my headlights. My car is a LHD and has failed the MOT on beam pattern, I thought I could get away with just replacing the h/light glass for RHD lenes, but you can't, the reflector is 'handed' as well.
So where the best/cheapest place to buy a complete h/light units ? I know I could use a "main stealer".

Rob,

Nice to see you here too (as well as Rennlist!!). I'm afraid I've been there too - got my headlamps replaced last year for the MOT. Cheapest place I know is Bert Gear at Berlyn Services in Cornwall. He's really helpful and a delivery service better than most. Depending on whether you have beam adjust or not they are £94 or £80 each (inc VAT) I believe. His web site is http://www.berlyn-services.co.uk/

Cheers, Dave and Mel

Last one I bought cost me £5 S/H. Local breakers were breaking a RHD Targa (thats why I've got one RHD headlight, and one LHD!). They didn't know what they had. I had a field day for trim etc, I swapped out the best with my car and ebayed the the rest. Made 5 X what paid for all the parts on ebay! So tomorrow I try the breakers. I just dont like paying full list price for parts, even though Porsche prices compared to some 'eurotrash, and Jap brands' are very reasonable!

You mentioned that a local breaker has a targa. Can you give me their number as my Targa could do with a couple of parts.

Many thanks

Hi Matthew,

That was back in May, So I think they would have disposed the rest of it by now,
but just in case it was Silver lake breakers near Southampton (Botley).

Hi all, can anyone tell me if the arrow etched in the glass on the headlight denotes the way the dipped beam goes?[:)]

Tone,

Yes, it does. RHD headlights which dip to the left have an arrown pointing to the left. LHD are the opposite.

Dave

Paul,

It's worse than that I'm afraid. You'll need complete headlight units - £200+ each for non-levelling type, lots more with the levelling. Replacing the lens alone will not give the correct beam pattern and will fail an MOT.

Dave

Ouch.... Thanks for the advice... Are the headlights 964 specific or do earlier 911 ones fit.
Ill look out for a second hand pair as the uk registration is only temporary, the car is going to france with me next year hopefully hence buying a lhd one in the first instance

To get it through the MOT it maybe possible to blank out a portion of the lens as we do when traveling to France or fit a pair of those lens deflectors from a motor factor. Replacing the headlamps is an expensive thing to do if its a temp measure.

^^^ What he said, my car runs original LHD lights and lenses, I simply black out the portion and its fine for the MOT. I guess individual garages may vary, but got to be worth a go before forking out for new lights.

I still have the original LHD headlight units on mine and they are adjusted as much as possible for UK road. It has passed the last six mot's at various stations without a problem.
