heard of this before??

Appears my speedo has stopped working! just had it serviced last week and noticed that the miles haven't increased since the book was stamped. Strange thing is the speedo still works, ie. i know how fast i'm going but it just doesn't seem to have racked up the miles..

Must have only just happened as i can see an increase since MOT in December and again when i noted it in March..

Any ideas? i guess the unit itself must be faulty inside?
 
I've fixed mine in the last few years, the gears that work the odometer had failed, have a read here.

I was just about to ask the same question on the forum. The odo failed on my SC failed a week or two back and Brian Woodward suggested depressing the zeroing knob a few times to free the gears as he has known this to work. However this tip failed with mine so I will follow Bones links and will let you know progress.

There is some speculation that zeroing the odometer on the move causes damage to the gears, I can't verify that in any way but since hearing this I always zero mine at a standstill, perhaps 25-30 year old plastic gears just need a little nudge to take them over the hill into failure?

I have removed the gauge from my 83 SC. The instrument is not the same as that shown in the Pelican write up. However I removed the rings and glass as described by PP ( be careful). Place the gauge face down and with a long thin screwdriver lever outwards gently. It should part in time. There are 4 retaining screws at the back of the instrument. Undo these and the working parts will slide free, but be careful not to disturb the attached wires. From here on in I am making assumptions. Viewing from the face, on the right hand side behind the face is a vertical cylinder with 2 green and 1 yellow wire attached and a geared shaft at the top. I think this drives the odo. On my instrument the transparent brown wheel engaging this shaft has several teeth broken and I think this is the cause of the problem. Maybe if your example has the same defect then we need to find 2 toothed wheels. A difficult request I fear.

guess what? mine's started working again! yep - been out for a good run today and it just started clocking the miles up again.

I'll keep this info handy though, as i'm sure it's only a matter of time before i need it!!!

Does anyone one know where this little cog can be sourced, or of a competent instrument repairer or again, does anyone have a spare speedo for a late model SC surplus to requirements?

I had him send over the gears for my speedo last year. A careful hand is needed when replacing the gears but it can be done easy enough.

When removing the old gears be careful and count the teeth on the original (I forgot to do this so had a bit of an issue in deciding the correct tooth count to get). Let me know how many teeth you end up with.

Thanks for the contacts re odometre repair.
I have just removed my speedo and removed the front cover as descrided in the instructions you have given p-car.com

The broken gear can easily be seen, it's the one driven by the worm gear/motor.

Now I am at the part where I need to remove the speedo arm or needle, the instructions say that the speedo arm is a push fit and to be very careful removing this speedo arm. I have had a go at gently removing the arm as instructed but as yet it won't budge? The instruction given are for a 993 odometre repair and I was wondering if any body had removed the speedo arm of an SC and could advise me?The speedo arm is mounted onto a disc or centre boss . The boss has a small piece of plastic? sticking out about 1.5mm square in line with the short end of the speedo arm and there is also a small dome like the top of a ball bearing close to the main centre shaft. I suppose its like trying to defuse a bomb, but anyway, if I can remove the speedo arm I think it will be plain sailing to get the unit apart and remove the gear.
Any help would be most appreciated.
