Heat Exchanger

Anyone know what the difference is between the heat exchanger (nearside) for a manual transmission 964 versus the tiptronic shift? Both have different PET part numbers (ending .32 for the M64.02 engine (tiptronic) and .05 for the other M64.01/03 engines).

How would a tiptronic system affect the shape/routing of the heat exchanger?

I wasn't aware they had different part numbers until you mentioned it. I know that the undertray is also different on the tiptronics which would lead me to believe that there is indeed a 'routing issue' which would mean you would have to replace with correct part number.

I'm guessing that you've got a problem with the cat exhaust flange crumbling, hence your reason for asking? If so, I had this issue and had a new flange welded on to fix it. A new heat exchanger would have cost about £2,000 + fitting.

Yep, it's the flippin flange to cat bypass; bolt holes now slots and flange plate warped/bent allowing some blowing. I did think that if I can't use the tiptronic HE then I'll arc weld up the bolt holes and re-drill and grind down the flange to reduce the small (<1mm) warps to make flat. Worse case, do what you did and make a new one from 6mm plate and weld on to the pipe.

Why are these things so expensive?!

Here's my thread on the subject:

The solution was to make a new flange. This was done by unit 11 in Warrington. The flange was made thicker (10 mm I believe) to take account of the wastage when cutting off the old one. The distance between the flange and the connection to the next silencer (or bypass) is a very tight tolerance so you have to be careful to get this right to make sure the cat will still fit. To me the cost of having this done to make the exchanger almost as good as new (£200) was a no brainer compared to buying a new one or a used one (which would suffer from the same effect eventually).
