Heat Shield/Deflector

Can anybody help/advise? A piece of alloy fell off my car the other day that appears to perform as either a heat shield or deflector. Apparently it was mounted on the near side of the engine towards the back around the bottom of the engine block. I am led to believe it is part no. 944 101 033 04.
The question is what is it supposed to do? As there doesn't seem to be any major heat generation in that area, is it perhaps to direct air flow round the engine? Not least of all is it an urgent replacement or something that should be dealt with on the next service? All answers much appreciated.

If it is indeed the part that you say then I'd suggest you put it back on asap. It's a heatshield that protects the oilpan gasket from the exhaust. Now knowing from bitter personal experience what is involved in renewing the sump gasket I would put it back on as a matter of urgency.
This link explains it better www.dietersmotorsports.com/tech/1999/5-99.html

There is a heat shield that fits over the top of the exhaust manifold that is prone to fatigue cracking and rattling. These can be removed with no adverse affects.

Pete. Thanks for your reply, however I'm confused. If the shield is designed to protect the sump gasket from the exhaust shouldn't it be fitted to that side of the engine? A parts explosion I got from the local Porsche centre shows it on the other side of the engine (their parts guy couldn't tell me what it was for). I looked at your link and that quotes the part number I was given so perhaps the part number is incorrect. Reading the article and also the response from Scott mine appears to have suffered from this parts usual problem of fatigure as it has fractured, apparently over a period of time along the bolt fixings. In the interests of completeness and in the belief it was put there for a reason I will replace it. What ever purpose it serves! Thanks again. Ian

Scott, thanks for your reply. However, I think you may have the wrong part, as mine based on a parts explosion, belongs on the other side of the engine. It has however fractured in much the same way as you describe. As you will see from my response to Pete, I'm still none the wiser!! Ian

The only heat shields I know of are both mounted on the exhaust side 1 protecting the engine mount and 2 mounted on the oil cooler protecting that - I would replace both.

I've had a cooler gasket go and an engine mount!
