Heat Shield Rust

The OPC just told me that my exhaust heat shield is beginning to rust and will result in a heat shield rattle soon. I have heard of the heat shield rattle as a common problem as the car ages but rust causing it is new to me; is this a common problem? Car is just a little more than 3 years old. Quote for changing it is some £150...

When mine rattled it was just the fixings - a sort of Dzus-type fastener.

I found 2 fixings on one side, and one the other were corroded, and replacing these was a little fiddly, but easily do-able by someone who can hold a socket.

I haven't heard of the actual shield rusting so bad that it causes the rattle yet - just the fasteners (although the shield certainly doesn't look pretty). No doubt they do rust through - but I thought the fatseners went first.

Fasteners are not cheap for what they are (a cam lock, thick washer, and captive retainer) but cheap enough at £5 a set.

There are 3 fastener sets for each of the 2 heat shields.

3 x spire clips and bolts for o/s exhaust heat shield was a grand total of £3.60 plus VAT. Had them replaced on my car by Parr at 48k service to fix the rattle.

Sounds strange you need to replace the shield at 3 yrs old. Maybe you should try to claim on your extended warranty? [;)]

Sadly this would come under the category of wear and tear [:(] I'm sure there is some rust but it would take several years before it was come off; think OPC just wants some business...

They do indeed want the business. They'll talk you into all sorts if they can. They are car dealer's after all! []

If your car is only 3 years old, it is bound to have evidence of rust on it ( or is the shield fabricated from Stainless Steel perhaps? If so, shame on your OPC!)). I think the service bay managers tend to prey on the fact that us guys generally like to keep our cars in top shape. The words 'rust' and Porsche are not ready bed fellows. They know that many owners will simply nod in the affirmative if they suggest its changed.

I don't buy the 'will rattle soon' argument. Fix it when it does rattle and get an indi to do it.

Keep the cash for a few nice days out. Summers just around the corner...! [8D]

Mine started to rattle. it got to the stage that it was embarressing. MS OPC fixed it instead of replacing it. Cost me £45.

surely if corroding steel wheel nuts are a warranty issue then these must be too ?

I haven't heard of anyone who has managed to get corroded wheel nuts replaced under extended warranty; they are only covered on the 2 year manufacturer warranty, is that what you meant?

Thought I drop an update for those who subscribed to this old thread: I had a 111point check done at the Porsche Cambridge Open day (no cost) this weekend; It came out clean with no issues and I specifically pointed out the head shield and looked at it myself and we could not see any signs of it corroding away any soon and it was rock solid. I shall pass that report to my local OPC [;)]

wonder how many other heat shields they have extracted unnecessary money for [][][]

I did my exhaust heat shield fixings the other week, it only took 10 minutes per side.
The rear clip a little fiddly...

Here's the part numbers (need 6 of each item):
999.507.430.09 Bolt -£2.59 each
999.507.413.09 993 under tray clip -£1.27 each
900.151.007.02 Washer -£0.13 each
Note. Prices include 10% Club discount and you need to add VAT.

My car's nearly 4 years old now and done 36K, one of the clips was completely rusted away.

No more horrible exhaust rattle when moving away from the lights...[:)]

Regards,
Chris.

Here's a picture of the old clips v 1 new bolt, 1 new washer and 1 new clip.

I have just replaced the 2 heat shields on my 986.

I was surprised to find the shields themselves are only around £8 +vat each, but the clips look pathetic so I used stainless 8mm nuts&bolts with large stainless washers.

I think the cats will rust away before the bolts now[:D]
