Heat Shield

Noticed a tinkling rattle as I arrived at Prescott the other weekend. Looks like it's the heat shield under the exhaust manifold, protecting the steering UJ(?). I can see where it's fixed to the upper tinware, but can't see the lower fixing (where it appears to be loose)...PET shows the shield but not the bolts/screws. Nothing's fallen off yet...

Any body know what the bottom is fixed to please, and can I get to it with the car jacked up?

Hi on the basis the S2 has the same steering UJ heat shields as a Turbo - the bottom cone shaped heat shield is bolted to the large aluminium cross member - you'll need to remove the black plastic undertray to get full access to it.

Can't remember about the S2 but on the Turbo there's also heat shields underneath the oil filter and one that runs down the exhaust side of the block that covers the oil level sensor close to the sump plug.

Theres other heat shields underneath around the starter motor as well,

I had that issue on my S2 - in fact the bracket that holds the 2 parts of the shield together, and also holds the shield to the engine had cracked and was vibrating and rattling like crazy at a particular RPM range.

I got a new one from OPC (see pic attached) but it was an asolute pig to fit. Hardly any room to get it in. Managed it in the end but it required a lot of swearing and grazed knuckles.

I recall all done from the bottom apart from 1 bolt near the front. I had to undo the steering shaft and use all sorts of flexi extensions to get to the bolts. In fact if its the same shield as went on mine, as you can see, it's 3 parts bolted together. I had to seperate them and feed them into the space. Once in the space you are left with the simple task of assembling 3 loose parts with bolts and washers in a space that you can only just get one hand plus maybe 2 fingertips

the bolts that hold that on also hold on the oil filter housing, that's why you don't see any bolts in PET for it, and as above, its one of the hardest jobs with the engine in the car,

and they are shockingly expensive £130..........
 
Thanks all...it does look tightly packed down there. Not much room for my farmer's hands!! Nice to know there are other fixings, and thanks for the explanation about PET!
 
Good result last Saturday. Up on the hoist at Northway we saw it was a cracked bracket, so they were able to do a weld repair.

Just brilliant, as usual!
 
Does anyone have any details on how to extract and replace this coverplate/shield?.... Mine was cracked - managed to separate the old into the 3 parts, and get the bracket and rear piece out, but can't figure out how to remove the front section - does it come from below somehow? - or does it need manifiold or oil sensor to be removed... Couple of hours in and very frustrated and grazed knuckles! grrr.

Both parts will come out via the bottom but it is incredibly fiddly as you have found out :D IIRC there are two mounting bolts one is in the area of the oil pressure sender and the other further back. Getting a new one in and assembling it without constantly dropping the bolts is the hardest part, I never knew how colourful my language could be (neither did my neighbours)! :D
