Heated rear window operation

I am having a problem with the operation of my heated rear window. Does anyone know the principles of operation. When the control switch is pulled out does it pull in a relay that then stays energised for a set time, or is it a latching switch. At the moment, some times mine will work and other times it wont. You can pull the switch out to switch on, the indicator light on the switch illuminates but then as you release it, it goes out, in other words wont remain on. Another time it will be fine.
Any clues ??

Should click out with the switch illuminated and stay out in that position (push it back to turn off) - don't think it has a timer on it, have never left it on for more than a few secs (if that) anyway[:)].

That's not how mine works (1996 model year). One pull (comes out and springs back) switches it on (and light comes on). Another pull switches it off. It is on a timer too - have not timed it but about 5 mins - will switch off (and light goes out). It also operates the heaters in the washer nozzels and the mirrors.

First check the contacts on the back of the switch. After I had my audio system changed the lights on the switches became intermittent and I had to take radio out and fiddle about to get contacts well seated again.

The other switches (front and rear fogs) do click out and stay out on my car.

I used my Heated Rear Window yesterday and it was on for approx 10>12 mins.
There is normally a relay used with the Heated window

Sounds like a relay problem. There is definitely a relay on my 1994 car. The same switch operates the heated mirrors and washer nozzles as well.
